i never claim to be an expert, the reason my water seals failed was because i cooked the engine, a water hose spilt emptying the engine of water while on the motorway which cooked the engine....if that hadnt happened the engine would still be running strong today, yes it needed a clutch but i had plans for big power with it anyway so i didnt mind.

all im saying is with this one unless its got really high compression figures and is as mint body wise as mine is i dont believe its worth 3.2k more than mine, mine is also a 1994, it says it has a scuff on the front wing and scratches for example.

only way i can see it being worth more than mine is that is has suspension and those seats if they are real.....but alot more, well not really.

there are plenty of rx7s out there and for over 6k i would want a new/high comp engine, because to be fair i could just buy an rx7 for 3k and get steve to rebuild it for 2k with full 12month warrantee for cheaper

these are examples i would look at if i had that sort of money to spend

it wasn\'t raped, had good fresh oil, nice plugs and it didnt blow because of mapping so bang goes your theory

So what killed it then........    Seeing that it blew up then but was pretty good before...

who knows, maybe the stripdown might reveal something; i imagine the same goes for why your engine with 8. something bar let go? :driving

guys are cars are bloody ancient lets be honest and any number of things can fail and lead to problems which could then lead to engine failure of some sort.....thats just the way it is im afraid....old sh£t breaks eventually!!!

yip I agree with Ed, you name a high powered rwd sports car over 15 years old which is reliable and is not a money pit.
Remember the top gear episode with 3 old Italian supercars they all had major porblems and they still was worth 10k each.

mmm, some good off topic bickering here.

if (big if) the car is what it says with genuine low miles and some trick seats i\'d say it\'s worth it. engines can be rebuilt and swapped but a good condition, low mileage chassis on a mid 90\'s sports car is a bit of a rarity these days.

chrisJDM

a heated debate is always good :yes i think there are sooo many things that can cause a blown engine, at the end of the day every car is different and you dont truly know how the cars been treated in the past etc but then thats not just the rx7 as said these cars and other older cars alike are getting old and could have issues or potential issues

trotter

Quote from: turbotoaster;688405if an engine has excellent compression the failed after a week thats down to mapping or how the car was abused, nothing else, theres always a reason an engine breaks.
you can buy rx7s for example from carl with a full rebuild and 2yrs warrantee even for detonation(if he maps it) for around 5-6k, i would put my money there before an unknown quantity from japan.

No rebuild or high comp figures, 3.5k would be my max for it.....plus some money towards the seats if they could be proved to be real

agreed,

however, OMP failure would lunch an engine not running premix in about a minute I would imagine.

Now although I admit pre-mix would eliminate this, not all owners know, or even want, to run with it.  If you ain\'t running a PFC with the failure indication activated for the HEAT light the first you would know of the failure would be engine death. Thats\' not down to abuse, just bad luck.

Sometimes (rare admittedly, but my point stands) engine failure can seem to \'just happen\' out of the blue on prefectly good compression, low mileage engines.

If potentially buying a Rex, at the very LEAST I would:

1) Compression test
2) Champagne test if feeling paranoid
3) Check oil to make sure its been changed regularly (ie: not thick, black rubbish) - an indicator that the owner at least know\'s his arse from his elbow
4) Starts hot and cold
5) Good thrash to confirm twins were getting on with each other

just my two pence worth!

Cheers for the replies fella\'s, definetely given me a few things to consider. I\'m going looking at it this weekend. The guy says he\'ll take 4995 without seats. I\'m more concerned about a good engine, good bodywork and good chassis. If the scuff on the wing wont polish out i\'m giving it a miss, can\'t be doing with getting it sprayed. I wanna save my money for power

troy619

have dave c mine rx7 is up 4 sell contact me if u want 2 know more thanx troy

turbotoaster

what trotter says is best, do all the checks and see how it comes up, to be fair £4999 is alot more realistic for a nearly stock car, no point paying \'bride tax\' unless you want to go around shouting your JDM to the rooftops.

As long as its mint, and i mean mint with a great engine it might be worth looking at, but if you have to spend any money on it(like you say the wing) then i wouldnt touch it for that money

Dave C

i\'ll let you know how I get on. Bit of a treck for me to southampton troy619

good luck with the viewing Dave and hopefully it turns out to be the car you are after. If IF you dont end up going for that, I have a lovely white standardish 95 with 28000kms from new which I am shortly going to sell and can compression test it using my own mazda tester if need be.
