Is your rad like this?

The radiator on my car has what looks like a temperature sensor top left next to the radiator cap. Its not connected and isn\'t used...

I managed to buy a used but re-cored 1st gen rad off ebay for 0.99p..... a bargain!

but this rad doesn\'t have the temp sender that the other rad does....

From what I can gather, this seems to be the standard rad and the one with the top left temp sender seems less common.

Which rad have most people got...?
How come there are 2 different types....?
What\'s the temp sender for as the main temp sender is on the engine...?

Any ideas???

Ian my rad does not have the sensor, and is like the one you got from ebay, it is also the original rad.

Ian65

Thanks Dibs, that\'s good to know.
I wonder if the one with the sensor is perhaps from a series 1 or something?
I can\'t ever recall seeing one before, certainly not on a series 3.

A7RXY

No its new to me, maybe David can enlighten us.

just noticed that the shroud is different as well. Seems to be fitted to this specific radiator...

Maybe as its a 86 model it could be change over bit they used for the 13B engine, as the a/c switches for our heater controls.

That looks like a control switch for an electric fan. Possibly from another model of Mazda or later RX7 as I don\'t think any FB\'s had other than the \'vicious\' fan? Certainly Series 2\'s and Series 3\'s were viscous.

Tag a multimeter on it and see if it switches i.e. contacts inside, or whether it\'s a thermistor inside, in which case a sensor. The big fat spade contacts say \'switch\' to me.

That recored rad for 99p is a bargain Ian, it\'s cost me £100 each for a recore on a couple of FB\'s over the years.

If you\'re staying standard viscous on the Black one you\'re sorted, if you\'re going electric on the black one then maybe you have to swop rads about from the Red car somehow?

That\'s my take on it. Any other ideas?

Ha ha Inspector!
Sussed  me out!

My plan on the black project car is to go electric and I\'ve bought a pair of MR2 fans as they fix straight on to the 1st gen rad, are the perfect size, are integral with their own shrouds, shift loads of air and can be controlled separately from each other...

Here\'s the fans...

and this is how they will look on the car...

As the mystery rad has the sensor ready fitted, I was thinking of doing as you said and swapping them over.

It\'s a strange one, I still reckon it\'s from some 1st gen model cause it looks identical apart from this extra sensor and the shroud but who knows!!

My rad is exactly like the eBay one you\'ve got too:chat

I got mine re-cored but with a double the thickness in core and tube. Guy squeezed it into the stock package so it is uprated. Wasn\'t too cheap !!

Mine doesn\'t have that plug either ! Would have prefered it so I could put a gauge in the top pipe instead of my fan switch.

One note too is mount the fans to the outside frame of the radiator. I broke an alloy rad with the twisting of the 16in fan !

that\'s a good point Shaun, luckily the MR2 fans hook onto the lip at the top of the radiator and then bolt onto the fixing points for the original plastic shroud so should be ok

Quote from: captainbizzaro;685546Are they MK2 MR2 fans

Will the height of your Rad be a problem Tim?
Series 2 has the oil cooler under the rad whereas the S3 has it integral with the engine.
Since the S3 rad still occupies the whole space, then that suggests the S2 is shorter?
