Ok so, Im currently seling my S2000, and I have been looking for an RX7 to replace her with.

Now here is my issue. I no very little ( a week ago it was nothing ) about the RX7 or the rotary engine\'s, and I hear a lot of scare stories about the engines, and them dying 500 miles after there brought or needing a rebild right after you get them. And to be honest with you, I dont know if in over worriying about this or not.

Additionally there is a lot of fluctuation in the pricing at the moment, for example I see 96\'s for 4k, 93\'s for 6k, and all this way of Mileage years and spec, all for sometimes appearing very cheap prices, Im having trouble guaging what price I should be paying for any given car.

My situation is this:

6k Budget
I need to have a reliable car ( hate my daily driver )
I would like some additional Horses
Plans to drift the car at a none competitve level later in the year
Attending 5 - 6 track days a year
I still want to be able to drive the car on the road in relative comfort ( Wont be stripping the enterior etc... )

The Solution:

Spend 1 - 1.5k on an engineless shell
Spend 5 - 5.5k on a completly fresh built twin rotary with..
A Heavy street port ( without affecting idle )
Some extra fuel to the engine
Some extra colling to the engine and oil
Apexi FC + Commander + Map
Clutch to handle the new power without issue

Price includes sourcing all parts, all labour, fitting, mapping, the lot.

All in all 6 - 7k for a car that can put out 340 - 360 hp without any problems at all, and I can track and push without fear of killing my engine and being left in Germany with noting but a dead rx7 to get home with.

Throw on a set of Tein\'s some dishy rims and a short shift and she is ready to drift, for an additional 2k

I have spent a good couple of hours talking this over with Super 7 Auto\'s and I must say I am amazed at how helpfull they have been so far, And they really are just a wealth of information down there.

I have a daily ( Astra ) driver that I can use while the work is being carried out, all in all looks like a good deal.

Can anyone see any problem wit doign things this way ( apart from finding a nice shell of course )

What do you all think ?

I cant be bothered to post my long post about the perils and pitfalls of buying an engineless car all over again....look for previous posts by me...maybe with the word "bushes" as a keyword

Yeah, you do hold a good point, But I would say the most important part of a car is the engine, and havin gthe peice of mind that I know that is going to be a good reliable engine, makes me a much happy driver.

Of course you could be right the shell could have seized bushed, and ....ty gearbox, and suspension on the way out and a fduked diff, and i could get royaly screwed on it,

But is the risk really that much more than any other car you buy. but throw in the fact the engine coudl also go back before you even get home.

Not to mention im getting an engine built specifically to my needs as a driver.

if your going down that route, you might aswel eather buy a car which is complet with a dead engine for about 2k, or by an already rebuilt sorted example from a club member.... that way you know the car has been looked after by an enthusiast instead of someone who just likes the look of the car and knows nothing about the mechanical mysterys inside!

you could get an running rx with that power cheap, as they only need exhaust, intake and powerfc to reach those figures, 334hp at the fly. at .8 bar and still have cash left over for rebuild

The problem ive been comming across with the RX&\'s that ive been looking at is when you start getting down the price range like that, there often comming with a lot of little problems, and again im left with that uncertain feeling about the whole things again.

However buying a car that already has a lot of the parts I would be going to buy,

FMIC/Apexi FC/Coilovers/exhaust/rims etc...

could end up saving me a lot of money in the long run.

But as mentioned before offsetting the price of a rebuild into it and im pretty much back in the same place.

To be honest, this is one of many options im exploring, Until my S2000 sells im not really pressured at all to make and decitions, So im weighing everything up.

But thanks a lot for the input so far, Im starting o get a feelf or the cars now, and I must say im looking forward to it :D

View lots, drive lots before you buy.  Pay close attention to any work thats been done, and ideally pick up from a forum member that you can check their post history and see what problems they might have had with the car!

the only thing going from an s2000 to the rx7 is servicing/general check over. ive had an ep3 which was highly tuned and i didnt need to worry about anything which im sure you dont.

maybe im just paranoid because my engine blew  :Giggle

My S2000 got new oil + filter + sparks every 2500miles, and timing adjusted every 5000, and I did a weekly inspection on all the problem area\'s every weekend before she got her weekly wax :D

I had a Celica GT4 that I did not show the same love and care to, and thats when I learnt what happens f you dont give your car the tlc it needs :D
