I stumbled on a thread about this in the past few days and thought it would come in handy so I copied it into a how to folder on my PC.
Can\'t remember if I got it from here or FDUK, or who posted it!!  Sorry for lack of credit to the right person, but be clear this is someone else\'s genius and I\'m not trying to pass it off as my own.

hope it\'s helpful to ya though as I\'m sure that was the author\'s intent.

QuoteI had the rattly mirror glass and fixed it without too much trouble....

The glass on mine (\'96 Type RS) was glued in to a carrier and the carrier fits in to the wing mirror pod held in by screws.

I took the wing mirror pod off and dunked it face down in warm water - then moved to warmer water and eventually hot water. I left the mirror pod in there glass side down. Eventually the hot water loosened the glue enough that I could gently lift the glass out completely - the glue remained on the back of the mirror and on the plastic carrier. I didn\'t clean either.

This gave me access to tighten the irritating screws that had worked loose - I tightened them up and then re-heated the mirror/pod, pressed the mirror back into the plastic carrier and popped it back in the warm/warmer/hot water to heat it all up and then push the glass firmly and evenly back into the carrier - fitted the pod back on the door - and the job\'s a goodun.

Gotcahs.....

I couldn\'t take the mirror pod off easily at first. I discovered that if I turned the pod to fold it up I could see two big screws. I undid them and the mirror pod came off.

I couldn\'t take the wiring harness off so I had to do all the work with the mirror pod wiring loom still running to the car. I put a couple of thick big towels over the wing/bonnet on that side and rested the hot water tub and other things on the towels to protect the paint.

I got some of the sticky stuff on the mirror side of the glass - Bottoms!!! It only came off with a dose of acetone (nail polish remover) but it did come off.

I was paranoid about the heat cracking the glass so I used progressively hotter and hotter water to slowly heat everything up - it needed to be left in there to heat soak.

The glass came out of the plastic carrier but the edges of it were sharp!

Not sure if that\'s the official way of doing it - but it worked for me.

Someone told me last year you have too smash the glass to split them open, i presume to get to the screws? But dont quote me on that!
