Hi all,

I am getting to the stage where I can start putting in some harnesses ready to accept the roll cage at some point, basically I need some helpful pointer to where I should get them and also what I should get.

I have heard that its best to get a 3" shoulder strapped one as this won\'t cut into you when fastened as they need to be tight.

I am thinking that a 4 point harness should suffice, im not worrying about reaching my stereo or anything, as the car doesn\'t have one :rollin

I saw something like this on demon tweeks:

http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/products/ProductDetail.asp?cls=MSPORT&pcode=TOTMH640-1001

Its non FIA (although oddly states that it is), but has 3" straps and a latch close mechanism.

What I might do is run a 3" more expensive harness for myself and then get a cheaper 2" one for the passenger side as the passenger seat won\'t be in the car at all times.

I am just wondering what makes/suppliers people suggest, im not going to buy some ebay special ones as, like with the brakes, im not going to skimp on safety parts, but I can\'t afford £700 harnesses either, I just need a balance between performance and cost, don\'t need a light weight helium one or one made from myrrh lol :rollin

I use Luke and sabelt products. Stay away from the latch type as I have seen a rollover and it came undone as the drivers sleeev caught under the latch and flipped it open. Shop around for prices as DT are known as Demon theives. Peter Lloyd Rallying is good

Yeah I know Demon Tweeks is expensive lol was just showing the style lol should I go for those seatbelt style ones?

Gary at Rotary art does the harnesses and at very reasonable prices.... not sure if they are 4, 5 or 6 point options mind? I got my 6 point ones from him & they are pucker job & FIA approved!

I use the Luke harnesses.....and would recommend a 6 point version.  The set Ive just supplied I specified the buckle to be on the lap belt, so leaving it optional as to whether you run the crotch strap or not.  You should have a crotch strap as it prevents submarining...ask Marco about this!! ;)

Jono FD3

by the shounds of it.... if that happens, don\'t be expecting children for a while :(

submarining in a 4point harness can be very scary I\'d imagine (for those who don\'t know... is when you slip further and further down the seat and end up with the lap belt under your armpits. Correct me if I\'m wrong). submarining in a 6 point should be the point you worry about having kids, if you crash hard enough that is, but a lot safer is the S hits the F.

Would you suggest to get 6 point harnesses? Where do the other 2 points fit? I can guess the 2 top straps go over my sholders and can fit to the rear seatbelt points - as long as it fits within the requirements. The lap belt points go where the bottom anchorage points are for the OEM seatbelts, where do the other 2 points go?

Sorry for being a bit blonde about this lol im rather new to this lol

AtomicRex

This is a contentious issue!!

You can only run a 5 or 6 point harness if the seats you are running have the cut out by your groin.

You need to attach the ends of the harnesses to the floor using eyes along with stress bolts.  These are imperative as they spread the load in the event of an accident....I was going to say unlikely....but why the hell would you be fitting harnesses if you didn\'t think you would crash!!

The shoulder straps need to be fitted so that when you are in the car the strap is no greater than 20 degrees from the horizontal.  This isn\'t the law, but a safe recommendation.  There are plenty of people running them down as low as 45 degrees, but if you were to be scructineered by an FIA man....it would fail.

We designed and made a harness bar that also doubles up as a strut brace.  That is the best method, or even better get a half/full cage fitted to your car!

We have started making these from scratch now, so we can do all the bends etc in house.  No point in going half measures!!

Its ok, I need to get this right, I will check for the 5/6 point harness hole, its a fibreglass/kevlar Bride race seat, so it probably has it :)

I have a winsport bolt in cage going in, but because its a jap spec cage it won\'t fit my UK spec car due to the sunroof being there! So it will become a weld in cage as about an inch needs to be taken off the bottom of the legs of the cage.

Do you do a harness bar for an FC? How much would that be? I would rather have a harness bar than using the rear mounting holes to be fair, I just can\'t find any! A roll cage is the ultimate strut brace lol so don\'t need that much more bracing as I already have a front and rear brace in place :)

I found this layout for the correct way to run harnesses, seems to make sense :)

Btw, I have harness holes down by the sides of me, but they are quite low, I don\'t see how a harness is ment to pass though them and then up over my lap comfortably, unless I need to take out the 1" of padding that seat came with?

Are the rotary latches better? I know kiwimazda wanted to point me away from something I can knock!

AtomicRex

You really have to go something to knock one of these!

Make sure you have the belts a different colour to the buckle.  I use black or silver belts and a red buckle...you need to be able to see this clearly if there was an accident.

The Luke 6 point harnesses are £123 each + VAT...these are one of the best ones you can get.  Plus, as I said, we can specify that the buckle goes on the lap belt and not the crotch...so you can choose which way you have it....no point in going ultra safe for a slow and gentle trip to the shops....however on track or a blast down the road....always worth the extra straps ;)
