hi can sum1 tell me how can i tell the difference between a standerd ecu and a after market one. all this performance stuff is new to me havent a clue:rolleyes: also wat dose (TBC) stand for  thanks

In essence, an aftermarket ECU (APEX\'i Power FC, Microtech LT8S, Haltech E11v2, MoTec M400/M600/M800, HKS F-Con V and AEM) allow total control over the engines systems including aspects like; fueling level, fuel/air ratio, ignition timing, boost control, etc. They are much more flexible than a stock ECU which has the perameters set by the manufacturer. As the stock ECU is designed with stock parts in mind it is not necessary to make it adjustable, if you alter the setup within the engine or ancilleries (induction kits, de-cat exhausts, boost controllers to up boost levels) the stock ECU can only compensate slightly. This will mean that fueling, timing, etc will not be optimised for the new setup. Depending on how far away from stock you take the car the result can be catastrophic!

A fully programmable ECU allows mapping to suit the cars setup and how it will be driven, so you can have it mapped for economy, quick acceleration, lots of mid range for circuit use, etc

That is a very basic explanation, I\'m sure some of the more technical guys will be able to go into it further.

Loud? Hell yes! :D

thanks 4 the information uv highlighted the main functions of a ECU, but the one in my car how could i tell if its a aftermarket 1 or a standerd 1

spanerhed7

my apexi power FC has it written in big letters accross the lid....
so many horses, so few parts....

As mentioned by Spanerhed7, most of the after market ECUs do have their name & model printed over the top of them. Your best bet if you aren\'t sure is post a pic of the ECU that u have (found under the floor at the end of the passenger footwell) and someone will be able to tell you what you have.

Thats about the size of it; it will be the same size/shape - difference will be either a sticker if its been remapped but isnt programmable (e.g. RE-Amemiya REDOM, Knightsports 4-Beat etc) or some thing a bit more permanent-looking like the Apexi Power FC which has the Apexi logo moulded into the casing...
