Tubular manifold people-how much can you hear your engine/exhaust thru the manifold?

As title. I swear my manifold is blowing, but other people reckon it sounds fine

Can hear, quite loudly, the "phut, phut, phut, phut", of the exhaust pulses in the enginebay, from the exhaust manifold area. Especially at low revs and idle. Soundsa like a blowing manifold to me.

I cant SEE any leaks from above or below, and wastegate 100% isnt leaking as put my hand over the screamer to check, but sounds way too loud to "just" be the exhaust noise resonating through the pipes without a leak.

Im sure it wasnt like it before, im sure all I could hear from the bay before was belts whirring and a light tingtingting noise. Unless ive now just got rotary paranoia...

So, people with tubular manifolds, is yours silent apart from the noise coming out of the tailpipe? Or? :2Confused:2Confused:2Confused

if you think its cracked spary wd-40 over it when cold and start it up, look for bubbles!

AshRX

place a matt over the tailpipe then spray WD ( as above ) or a non flamable liquid like fairy liquid with water etc onto the manifold. If there is a leak this will show where it is

StavFC

Thing is, with a twisty tubular manifold and the likelyhood it not being the top of a horizontal pipe, im not too confident it will work, but its worth a try!

Im 99% sure its blowing, im sure there was no noise from the enginebay at all before...?

use a length of rubber vac hose about 3-5mm diameter, put one end in your\'e ear and listen with the other end for the blow, i had the same problem with an exhaust blow on the manifold, I could smell the leak but couldn\'t find it, i used the pipe and found it easy

Andy- Good idea :)

Found this old vid of my car...
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7035048877751023379&hl=en
...and on the walkaround, when they have the bonnet open later on in the vid, it seems like all the noise you hear is still coming from the tailpipe only, it sure doesnt seem to now, so im not just being paranoid, I dont think anyhow...

How much grief is it to remove a turbo and manifold on an FC with a big single? Dont look too bad, you dont need to remove the inlet do you?

ENVYD

ahh when i seen the name StavFC i though of Stavros with the sexy Knights FC but was unsure as i have not seen any of your other posts! would love to see it in person when i seen that you where getting the bad boy on driftworks!

kick ass ride mate!

Well this weekend, after a week off work custom making/fitting water injection to make the engine safer, and fitting my FIA seats and harnesses to it, rather than jus chilling, the boost controller has broke, the manifold seems to have cracked, and one of the secondary injectors looks like it might be leaking a little, so its certainly not my best friend at the moment!

Was meant to be taking it to TRAX, but now, hmm, will it even get fixed in time? Bloody cars!

Whats caused that? boosted too much?

the hat

was the manifold stainless and as for the boost controller you will prob find you have just upset a power or earth somwhere while fitting the water injection and the injectors an o ring should not be too hard to fix

StavFC

Manifold is some ERC job from japan, dont think its stainless. Either way, its going to need to come off.

Boost controller is knackered it seems, powers up then powers straight back down, so no fuse, jus ....e. Had a problem when I got it, but fixed it with some very lucky wiring efforts, but now its just had it it seems.

Injector means taking the upper inlet manifold off by looks of it? Not exactly a 2min job :(

the hat

the manifold does not look a bad job might take a little while but nothing too hard

there is a greddy mild steel tubular manifold that takes an external wastgate on ebay just now not sure if it would suit the setup your running tho as you might just end up chasing craks in your current one

karl_tate

shame but not too many problems, upper inlet doesnt take long to take off at all.

you will just have to see how bad its cracked when its off weather its repairable or not.
