Hi

Do i need a new starter motor ? Just started to make a terrible graunching sound on starting from cold. After a couple of turns sounds alright and starts.

Any suggestions

If i need a new one can anyone tell where i can get one.

Have had 1st gen S3 for 7 years always garaged just back on road after 4 years. starting to spend a few pennies on it need contacts for spares.

Many thanks

Post up in the 1st gen section Darren - there will be someone with an idea or a starter motor to help you out. RX Motors in Dorset might have a used part or you can get the one you have rebuilt. Broadway Electrical Services (01375 372 782) are very helpful (unlike their website - //www.broadwayelectrical.co.uk) There are plenty of other places though and there\'s bound to be somewhere near you that can do it.

Sounds like it\'s turning before being properly engaged?? They are pre-engaged these days I think?
I think it\'s time to whistle the starter motor out and have a look. Clean the drive cog (bendix as was) in petrol or meths (something that will not leave a residue ... CARE WITH SOLVENTS REQUIRED OF COURSE). Examine the teeth on the drive and have a look in at the engine ring gear at the same time. Check the solenoid seems OK. Before reassembly, lubricate the teeth using a graphite pencil....no oil as it will just pull dust onto the teeth.
If a spare starter is required I can point you to a Series 3 and a Series 2 in wreckers yards on Tyneside, also a guy in Peterborough with some S2 parts. Paul his name. Tel 07876207848.
Then there\'s RX motors as Jinx says, Jimmy\'s in King\'s Lynn, Rotaryart, Rotechnics.
Also worth looking on ebay for USA parts- importing from there seems reliable enough for guys on the Forum but of course there\'s freight costs.
Hope that helps.

Out of interest I got the Mazda workshop manual out.
There\'s an \'over running clutch mechanism\' integral with the starter so maybe a dismantle jobbie might show something there. Happy to scan and email the starter motor section for you if you give me an e mail address. (Only full members can Private Message between each other).
Trouble is I\'m away now for a couple of days - but I will do it Friday if you want the info.
