Hey all

Its been 3 years since I had a rx7. I bought a supra aerotop after and it was never the same. Different car, but I found the supra just as reliable/unreliable as the rx7 without the fun of the rx7, so figured it was a pointless move in the end. Contrary to what supra owners tell you about their rock solid reliability.

Anyway, my question is this. I learnt a lot from having the rx7 before and wish I had done things differently, as with the supra.

Both these cars are 15 years old now so I was thinking of buying a rx7 and doing the following straight away to avoid later heartache;

Buying a new:
  • clutch
  • radiator
  • intercooler
  • thermostat/water pump
  • brake lines
  • and doing an immediate service myself

straight away as these things after so many years are likely to go.

Am I being unnecessarily anal or would changing these items be a good idea - I wanted to change these as all these items gave me problems with the rx7/supra simply due to the age and wear and tear over the years.

Is there anything else you could advise me on before buying? Would appreciate it. I *think* I am relatively clued up on what to test (compression test etc.) on rx7 engines.

to be honest - if you know your stuff - then thats cool

what i would suggest is now that the early FD\'s are coming up to 17 years old - have a good old nosey around for rust - they "might" be showing signs of it now :(

Thanks, I always think I do until something new pops up and surprises me. I now sell cars and as a consequence see common faults prop up so I hope I would be able to diagnose problems quite quickly. But we\'ll see...

Really looking forward to being back. :)

tbh, why dont you just spend the little extra cash and buy one with those bits already done. there seems to be some good deals with these around at the moment and if you know what you have to look out for, then surely that would seem the better option?

sounds like a good list, as stated have a good look underneath for rust, a few otheer things to add to the list are

all the bushes - suspension, engine, diff, gearbox.

if they still have the standard items may be a bit worn or soft.

Also change the plastic AST for a nice shiny one :Thumbsup!

Aw thanks man. Promise no more complaints about intercooler blow outs -lol. I have matured a lot since then.

Will be getting a black or white one and going for the look like the old one you had. No idea where I can pick up r magic spoilers these days. Plenty of time to look though :)
