After driving home the other day I noticed that I\'ve gained a rattling sound for under the bonnet. On further examination I found that it was coming from one of the pulleys on the engine, the furthest one on the right as you look at it (sorry, dont know what its called or does), just under the elbow.

So i\'ve rung up my local rx garage and getting them to have a \'look\' at it on wednesday, but i was just wondering if you guys could shed some light on what it could be and then maybe how much it\'s gonna cost me to get sorted out. I also noticed that the pulley had a small chip taken out of it around it edge. Could this be the probelm, or are there berrings that wear out on these pulleys???

Thanks for any answers :)

its the air conditioning compressor..the bearing should be ok as long as the belt isn`t too tight..if worst comes to the worst ii reckon you could get a second hand one for about £50+ from rx motors etc  how many miles has your fd done? To check belt tention just press on the belt in between the pulleys with your finger..it may have been overtightened causing bearing failure

My car has done aprox 64k. How long should a berring last? and are they easy to replace?
Cheers for that Robbie :)

is that 64,000 kilometers or miles? im guessing that the air conditioning compressor should last for at least 100,000  miles depending on usage. i doubt you could replace the bearings, only replace the whole unit, it would be better to replace the bearings, that way your getting a virtualy new unit, but i doubt you can

There is a little button hidden away that not many people know how to use. It\'s called the search button :P

Usually that little annoying rattle is the Honda kicking your ass on the motorway haha

Ada7

Is that a certain honda that was smoking like damp wood fire! :rollin

That\'ll be the one! 9500rpm redline on the old girl HAHAHA

VTEC just kicked in YO!!!! :D:D

i found a JUN ecu for the wifes Civic last night which takes redline from 8k to 9.3k and lowers the vtec point to 4.4k its only £250 sounds like fun hehe

Nik da Greek

Hahahaha! 9.3k, like they don\'t sound dreadful enough at 8! :p

Still, it should make a good noise when the valves turn into extremely expensive knitting at those sorta speeds :Giggle

.... and back OT :)

think my air con pump is burglered. The belts are fine, it\'s actually a bit of the wheel that\'s loose and wobbling all over the shop, making a right racket and promising to disintegrate! Hoping to bypass until get a replacement fitted, obviously not the absolute best time of year for this to happen.... plan to fix this and do some other bits soon.

btw where DID you get that pic of MJ (sorry) :)

update:
emailed an annotated pic of the broken bit to David at Rotechniks over the weekend, discussed it on the phone with him on Monday, and a bypass belt arrived this evening, fitted in less than 30 min, so back on the road until it\'s replaced :driving :wiggle

great service as usual :god
