hello,

just wondering how people decide how many miles an engine should do to run it in?
some new cars say only need to run in for a few hundred mles.. some say 2k miles.

im just refering to rotaries here but above is just some variances.
does it make a differance with the running in period if the housings are new or used?

just sth to ponder on :)
many tuners will prob say differently but be good to see what people think :)

Most of the tuner/builders have a 1000 mile \'running in\', with a possible oil change and quick check at 500 miles to get rid of any \'build\' crud that might have contaminated the oil.

Generally you want to keep it under 4000 rpm and completely off boost for that period, then start raising the rev\'s 1000 rpm at a time for the next 100 or 200 miles.  At about 1500 miles the car should be well run in and time for plenty of beans :yes

The point of the run in is to give the new seals time to bed in, for bearings to settle and also to check for anything that might fail straight after the build.

Some folk will say as little as 250-500 miles - depends a lot on how much work was done and what state the items were in (new or reused).  For all new parts I\'d suggest the 1000 mile run in

I ran mine in for 500 miles, but then:

A. I was impatient
B. The engine rebuild wasn\'t performed by any of the specialists.

When I had a full rebuild done 10 months ago by Kerim at Powergains Motorsport I was told to bring the car back after around 300 or so miles ( that was part of the deal to have the warranty on the engine) and have the general check, oil filter changed, oil changed and also new spark plugs fitted â€" I was running the engine for the firs 300 miles on the old plugs ( not so old mind you )

The engine was officially run in after 1000 miles...

Rebuilt mine myself, all seals were new, only the rotors, housings and plates were re-used.

Ran mine without boost up to 3500rpm for the first 500 miles.  Changed the oil at this stage and then ran another 500 miles still off boost but up to 4500.

After this 500, changed the oil again and then gradually increased rev\'s/boost etc for another 500.

Ran at full boost after 1500 miles and currently about 3500 miles since the build at christmas :D

I was told 500 miles if you\'ve re-used housings, irons and rotors. If not 1000 miles but you can go uptp 4500 rpm and use a little boost.

I am running mine in for 1000 miles as suggested by Carl, not been above 4000 rpm and its getting its first oil change next week. Its also a good way to see what else does come loose, for instance I did get carried away and the engine died, bit of experience led me straight to one of my intercooler hoses that had popped off, easy fix by the road but glad it happened as it will now get a complete new set of hoses and clamps. I will also check every single nut and bolt once its on the ramps. Well worth that double check.

cool.. nice to see the variances :)
might be bit hard to not go over 4k revs lol
but im sure i\'ll have quite a bit of grunt still below that.. i hope :)

I\'m getting mine back late next week, after a fresh build, new plates, housings, seals etc and RXMotors street port, the guys there have suggested the same, under 3k for 500 miles, then filter and oil change, further 500 miles up to 4k no boost, another oil and filter change then a few hundred miles increasing the revs and boost in increments should see it proud.

Then up for a map wahoo! :driving
