guys, when I went to japfest the other week, we had just been sat at motorway speeds then straight in to stationary trafic queing to get in to combe! when we were sat in the traffic the oil temps started to clime... basicaly I see about 65c on the gauge when we are cruising along, but while queing it went up to about 85 - 90c and obviously the oil pressure droped with the thinning oil! So at this point I thought about putting small motorbike cooling fans behind the oil coolers ready for such instances in the future!

Has any one done this & is it worth while doing??

Cheers

mine does this too, isn\'t it normal? Too cool and you get inefficient burn dont you? interesting!

I was just thinking of doing it to keep my oil pressure up when the car is stationery in traffic! the oil coolers have a thermostat in them too, so the oil shouldn\'t drop too low in temp! just thought it would be a nice idea for piece of mine!

Isn\'t the oil pump a mechanical pump ? You will see less pressure in traffic because the revs are much lower. Would have thought that wasn\'t too crazy a temp.

The water pump is exactly the same thing as the revs drop the l/min does too.

95o isn\'t an overly high oil temp - I think the number is 120o where even the more expensive oils start to degrade. Been many years since I got there, but I am running a major cooler for an FB.

Also bear in mind your guage might not be true. I found recently that when I was roaming around the MOTEC feeds the true engine temp was around 10o lower than the guage was reading. Depends where you\'re picking the temp feed up from in it\'s cycle, calibration of the guage etc etc.

Not too worried about the oil temp to be honest, it\'s just the side affect of lower oil pressure with thinner oil due to the heat! I\'m taking the temp reading from the oil filter plate, so I know the temp is a little cooler there than the rest of the system!

Most of the after market ones pick up at the oil filter in a pedestal.

Wouldn\'t it be hotter there beacause its just about to pass through the coolers ?or does it flow the over way :2Confused

are you still using the stock radiator for the coolant side of things aswell though?
because if your water cooling is very inefficient that will obviously directly affect the oil cooling efficiency aswell.

leon

What about wraping your oil lines with heatwrap too? that could help eliminate heat soak :wiggle
I woof in your general direction.

Jono FD3

Heat soak isn\'t a problem with my setup matey!! My water temps didn\'t cross 80c sat in the traffic for 30 mins! only ever heard the fans kick in once since I have done the V-mount and that was sat on the rams at MOT time!

jono did you get anywhere with the oil cooler fan mod? i was sat in a lot of traffic today with the oil temps reading 95, seemed a higher than i\'d like. water temps were 88 but was a really hot day. thats with a vmount!

Jono FD3

LOL... I haven\'t done anything with it as yet matey... got a list as long as your arm of things I want to do!!
But thanks for the reminder... I\'m going to look in to it now ;)

Hmmmmm. The warning function on my oil system doesn\'t even come on till 110 degrees. I wouldn\'t have thought 90s were too much to worry about? In fact, sticking fans in the narrow ducting might actually decrease the general efficiency of the coolers for all the time the fans aren\'t working?

Jono FD3

Very true nick, but you would only need to put a fan on one of the coolers ;) so in affect at worst you would have 1 and a half oil coolers operating (early FD\'s only had a single cooler & coped fine in the UK climate while driving) and when stuck in traffic you can flick a switch and again have the affect of driving at 20mph (ish) keeping the temps at a cool level!
