Do I just need a bigger breaker bar?

I\'m using a 16.5" (42cm) 1/2" drive breaker bar, with a 1/2" -> 3/4" adaptor and a 54mm bi-hex (rather than flat side hex.. unfortunately) socket. I\'m using the extension tube from my ally trolley jack with the breaker bar, and I reckon the breaker bar is gonna break before the nut undoes.

Should I just leave it \'til tomorrow and see if I can get a bigger breaker bar from Halfrauds?

Isn\'t the 54mm the easy one :) i find the 19 on the other end the B***h to get off (Liquid lock)

A tip, Take the motor and Socket to your nearest Quick fit and ask them very nicely if they will air gun it off for you, that way you don\'t need to lock the flywheel. Air guns are the Future!!!

Yep, If your doing it manually you will need a decent Breaker bar,Some form of Flywheel lock (usually a piece of Angle iron bolted to the Clutch bolts) and if your still struggling a Scaffolding bar to slip over the Breaker bar.

Are you doing a rebuild or changing the Flywheel?? If your doing a rebuild, Leave the flywheel on untill you get the 19mm out of the Front pulley (Usually Proper tight)

Hmm. Funny that. I tried my impact gun (240v DeWalt thing.. pretty good but not Pro power) on the 19mm one, and I quickly came to the assumption that it\'s not supposed to come off, and that it\'s part of the eccentric shaft. Is that not the case? :)

Well, my Supra is at a good garage at the moment, and there\'s a chance he\'ll be ringing me up tomorrow to say it\'s ready for picking up, so I suppose I could take the motor there.

Is the bare motor shiftable by an unfit 28yr old and his missus? Or will I need to .... about with the crane & creeper board like I did getting the whole thing (ancillaries included) into the shed in the first place.

I have a very hefty chain from the fly wheel to the top of the motor, like they do in the DIY-RE video.

When I sent off for a 54mm socket they sent a 58mm socket...

LOL, tell me about it. This 54mm one will make a perfect ashtray when I\'m done with it :bandit
(after I\'ve soldered up the drive hole, of course)

I\'m doing a rebuild. Thank god you told me that!

So I need to work on the 19mm one first, \'cause that\'s a real bitch?

karl_tate

well yeh a bit of a bitch but once the flywheel is off then you have nothing to stop the engine turning over.

i got a big chisel and hammer on my other engine and i managed to get it off.

but the engine that went bang was a right royal pain in the ass, did all sorts, try heating it up but still no joy, era ended up getting a puller which sorted it out :D

i have a nice tool for this job, its only a foot long, you hit it with a hammer and the flywheel comes off super easy, ive done a few with it. 100 quid you can have it or bring your engine to my house ill remove it for free

That\'s very kind of you thanks, and you\'re not too far from me, but I reckon the garage will sort it for me as he\'s a good and capable chap and I have to go there to pick up the other car anyway.

Besides, it sounds like I need to get the 19mm other end undone before I can attack the 54mm one.

I found if the 19 starts playing up heat often helps, The 19 is Liquid locked so if your replacing the Oil seals anyway heat the Bolt up with some bottles, let it cool down then try again. It Burns the locktight off the threads.

As for weight, i have picked up bare engines before now but its on my limit, 2 guys could pick one up easy enough. I don\'t think its the weight thats a real issue its more a case of it being aquard to maneuver into the back of a car.

Another tip for you :) When you take the 54 off you will find the Flywheel sticks on the shaft as its slightly tapered, If you have a Steel/Stock Flywheel get a good size steel hammer and give it a good smack on the back (there tin plate that covers some of the flywheel take that off and use that section of the back of the flywheel, try to avoid hitting the ring gear) Don\'t be shy, its the shock that free\'s the flywheel. just saves messing about with Pullers and with the flywheel off it makes the engine allot lighter.

Good luck.

Hi, quite new here, but had all my gearbox out a little while ago to put in the Os giken clutch. I used a fully charged snap on buzz gun for the large nut which was a life saver as I had nothing to hold the flywheel if it didnt work! To get the fly wheel off as previously stated it is on a slight taper. I wound the large nut back on a couple of threads to stop it flying back on my face when it gives. Gave it a technical tap and had a leaver bar on it. Thank god I put the nut back on, it really would have hurt!
