Out of interest does your lower inlet get Hot (like can\'t touch it)

Its driving me mad...... I spent ages making sure the charge temp was good, as little diff between the air temp loaded and unloaded only to find the Lower inlet is heat soaking so bad off the Turbo its raising the temp back up.

For example... I tested the temp at the Inlet elbow (20 deg) then stock location (25deg) then after some Agro and lots of messing at the closest i could get to the engine in the lower inlet (37deg) to try and make this a fair test i rapped each sensor with fire mat and put a Nimbus G2 box round it in an Attempt to keep heat soak at bay (i still think the lower inlet temp may be suffering from some heat soak due to the temp the manifold was at the time of the test)

This worries me slightly as the readings where taken after 5 miles and 1 WOT run. Unfortunately i didn\'t have a Thermal gun with me so i can\'t say what temp the Inlet was but i couldn\'t touch the lower Inlet and the upper was on the verge of Uncomfortable to touch?

I don\'t know if its just me being paranoid but the car is only running .7 bar at 370hp what happens when i up the boost?? This can\'t be normal?? I knew there was going to be a difference but TBH i\'m shocked but then the Hotside of the Turbo is an inch and half away??

This is with the Standard Stainless shield off so you get a good idea of how close it is.

I am liking this, but it still isn\'t doing anything about the manifold being bolted to the block which if the exterior is water temp 80-90deg.

I have also been reading up about Ceramic coating, is it true is has a life span? i have been told that it will Burn off at the higher range of temps and will need recoating in about two years? Now the guy who told me this is some sort of Metallurgist for BAE? but i can\'t find how much it drops temps? Maybe worth having it done??

you are worrying too much, just do what i did wrap the downpipe and put thermotec sheilding to the lim

Don\'t know how hot my LIM gets, but if it has had a good run, without getting stuck in traffic my UIM is cool to the touch. Only when stuch in traffic and then switching off does it get too hot to touch.

Our new LIM\'s are currently being casted at the moment...so once they are machined we are getting them Ceramic coated.  They will include an alloy additive in the coating to act as a reflective agent.

Our turbo kits are ceramic coated to include the turbine housing, the manifold and downpipe.  Should keep the heat down!!

Grizzly

TBH its proberly just me with my Paranoid head on.

But!! to be on the safe side.... I have just made a heat shield that sits between the Inlet and Exhaust manifold then goes all the way round the Turbo, i did make one out of 1mm stainless but it didn\'t do allot so i\'ve now made another out of Nimbus G3 which on first impressions seems to have dropped the under bonnet temps allot!! But that said i have just been for a quick drive round and on the PFC (with the old Temp sensor) its 29-30 on cruising, 34-37 When its given some in second/third, 38-40ish sat in traffic. It does seem to be more stable but i need to rig up a cold air feed now as its running with no filter.

Out of Interest John, how much do you charge for Ceramic coating?

AtomicRex

The Ceramic coating is approx £40 per foot for headers and downpipes and £125 for turbo housings.

This comes in their performance white range...but for an extra 15% you can have a choice from about 10 or 12 different colours.
