Could somebody please explain to me what a "cracked tip" means ?

I am assuming it means the corner of the rotor. Is this correct?

If that is the case, does replacing the side seals therefore fix this, or am I barking up the wrong tree? I understand that the housing might be gorged and what not, but I\'m just trying to understand this tip business.

cheers,
Carl

Brett

Tip seal usual means apex seal, so if you have a cracked one you will want to replace the apex seals as a bare minimum, probably a lot more once oyu have the engine open.

Loosely translated it means. \'Engine blown, but I dont want to say that cus its sounds expensive, so I will trick you with semantics\'

Fair enough ;)

I was thinking that the faces of the rotor were replaceable, but having watched the repair videos I see they\'re not, so it might be the case that a new rotor and even housing is required. Still, the job looks like an interesting and doable one that I could quite enjoy doing.

Have you opened up the engine yet? post pics and we can see what needs replacing

I haven\'t bought the car yet ;)
Thinking about going to have a look at the weekend.

ahh I see, then consider that the whole engine is fooked when haggling the price, apex seals, housing, plates, rotor. You may be lucky and only need to replace the apex seals, but normally when seals let go they take out the housing and damage the rotor in some way.
You cant tell what has actually broken in the engine until you rip it apart, so the current owner saying its just a cracked tip wont really know unless he has xray vision.

Parts to replace ALL of that would be in the region of 3K due to the poor exhange rate with Japan.

How are you gonna compression test an engine that is in bits?!
