I\'ve got an fd3 with custom door cards that leave me with little space by my right knee / thigh for clearance with the sparco steering wheel that I have on the car.

I\'d like to move the steering wheel an inch or so closer to the driver to help with clearance.  Is it possible to add a boss to it?  Has anyone done this before that could advise me on how to go about this?

If this is not on the cards then I guess I\'ll have to look at lowering the seat, or getting a smaller steering wheel (which I dont want to do as it will get in the way of reading the instrument pannel.):3Confused

Cheers. :mmmm

Hi

It sounds like your\'s is an aftermarket steering wheel?

In which case, it should be an absolute doddle to fit a spacer.  I had the same space issues, brought myself a D1 spec quick-release boss, took me about 10 mins to fit (including 5 mins to find the right-sized allen-key :D)

It should be 6 bolts holding the wheel on - undo those bolts, and use them to bolt the spacer/additional boss on.  Then use the bolts that came with the spacer/new boss to attach the wheel.

The only thing which may cause issues is the airbag (if you have one - I don\'t).

depending on the steeering wheel the boss kit for the rex obviously but this part number momm12114111111 is a momo space gives you another inch

Thanks guys.

The steering wheel I have a a sparco one - will your boss work with it Jono?  If so then I\'m interested - no idea how much they go for though, maybe you could tell me how much you want for it?

You can get me on simon.shaw@trustmatta.com

yea, it came off my sparco steering wheel, but it would fit any of the afermarket bosses!

I\'ll have a check to see what the going rate is and get back to you later fella ;)

If you\'re fitting a spacer, you may want to consider a snap-off boss.

Mine gave me about 2-2.5 inch clearance - and allowed me to remove the wheel (which is great for getting in/out with long legs, AND acts as an additional bit of security :D)

The snap-off kit I got is the same as:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/D1-Spec-Snap-Off-Type-Steering-Wheel-Quick-Release-Red_W0QQitemZ290310589504QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item290310589504&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1689%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318
(although I only paid about 35 quid for it, early last year)

So so much easier getting in and out - if you\'ve got long(ish) legs, I would say it is essential :)

thanks again for your help - if I buy that snap off boss then would I also need a spacer to get the 2-2.5 inch extra clearance, i.e. would the boss itself do the job?

the boss itself will do the job - its a second boss, and bolts to your existing one.  It\'s also got a really positive lock, and cannot unlock by accident.

I don\'t have mine to hand (car at the garage) so my memory of the size may be slightly out - its at least an inch extra tho, just for the quick-release mechanism.  Adding in the rest of the boss, probably 1.5" to 2" extra in total.

Logical - got the boos you suggested from ebay - it\'s now on the car.  Works a treat - thanks!
