help please. Is this needed? taken off gearbox to try replace clutch and some tiny needle bearings which are sat in the the flywheel with a 20mm bearing have fallen out about 5 out of 15 or something.. Is the pilot bearing needed?? thanks.

if the rollers have fallen out of the bairing from the center of the flywheel nut, then yes I would replace it!! do a search on it as someone made a tool to remove the bairing using threaded bar and cavety fixings.

Yes it is needed and keep the gearbox shaft inline with the engine shaft, which is always a good idea lol :)

And yes Jono it was me that made that removal tool, link here http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=51836

Hope it helps

i have repaired my pilot bearing..i have clipped the 5 needles back into the bearing with a screw driver! they quite firmly clicked back in and ive greased them up and the bearing now spins fine.

Always advised to replace the pilot bearing is it not?

You can get it out with alot of faffing about, a dremel, a small screw driver and a hammer. :)

if the pilot bearing was dead and nackered or collapsed inside flywheel what drive/noise/feel would you be getting from the car? thanks!

A lot of vibration through the gearbox i\'d have thought, you\'d deffo notice something was wrong...

Personally for how cheap they are and the hassle of taking the box off again should it fail i always replace it if the gearbox is off for any reason.

what about the seal behind it? or do you just do the bearing?

SmbFD3S

You mean the seal infront of it lol

Pilot bearing seal is up to you, i did it the first 2 times but seems a bit pointless to me, no-one else i know replaces it tbh....

what do you meen the seal is upto me? do you have any examples or anything im abit confused as i thought the seal was at the engine side :S must of got confused unless the seal is plastic because if it is i picked it out with a screw driver because it was corroded :(

SmbFD3S

Well if you follow the book and do it properly then yeah replace it, just letting you know that a lot of people i know dont....

And seal is on the box side not engine side
