Does anyone know if the component parts of the alternator are available ?

I\'ve seen in the service manuals that it mentions replacing brushes, regulator device and diode pack, as well as bearngs. Bearings and bushes look ok, checked connection back to battery from the B terminal and that appears ok

Mine seems to have packed up as of this weekend and isn\'t charging the battery - I\'ve had it apart (I know - just can\'t help myself) and it looks as if some parts may be serviceable - but I guess that depends on availability.

The unit seems to be a Mitsubishi made item - has anyone any ideas on where I can get the parts, or is it simply not economical and I need to get a replacement one ? If so, does anyone have a good working FC alternator (80A variant) ?

Could you not just do the FD alternator swap as on 1300cc?

http://www.1300cc.com/howto/how2/fdalt.htm

It would make sense if it started to pack up again, easier to replace and probably cheaper?

Not so straight forward without ordering the double pulley for the FD alt.

ordering the double pulley for fd alt??

can you not just make the hole bigger in the twin alt pulley to fit fd?

if you can get the exact part no then i could ask my uncle about obtaining parts, he owns a garage, well, more tyres and battery place in HK and he reconditions alternators also.
i just see him take them apart, brush the coils a bit and replace the washer type things lol

not sure if this is any help??

ideally best to take an alt wiv me to show him but they bloody heavy!! lol
2 doritos on a stick woohoo :rollin

Yeh - it could have been brushes - but these look in good order with plenty of material left - and according to the service manual - they are  hardly worn.

I gave it a good clean up and dried it all out - it\'s possible with the fuel pipe bursting off on Friday that it washed contaminant into the alternator - as it\'s failed since then.  Could just be coincidence.

Need to check a couple more things - then see if it will play ball.  May also be time for a new battery - that\'s on charge at the moment - see what voltage it reaches on full charge.

Sounds like a lot of work rebuilding an alternator.I have dozens of used ones!

Looks like the rotor winding has gone - followed some of the tests that I can do without the battery connected - and I\'ve got connection to the regulator, and the B terminal is ok but the test from L to earth is open circuit - should be 2-4 Ohms apparently.

When I had it apart, the bushes seemed ok, but I am wondering if I missed checking something now.

How much are you selling your Alternators for Tim ?

There\'s always: Universal Rotating Electrics Ltd, Unit 1C, 284 High Road, North Weald, Epping, Essex. CM16 6EG but there are probably others nearer to you who could help - which is why an "index of useful specialists that you might otherwise never find" would be a nice to have section on here.

Try the canal boat boys if you have any near you or marine suppliers in general. They still think fixing things is worth doing where the automotive market prefers to throw them away and sell you a new one....or a second hand one.

Got a second hand one.

Looks like the rotating winding had gone (bushes ok).

I am going to pull the old one apart again and brake it down to components and check each part - might be useful as spares should it ever happen again.

Also checked car electrics to make sure it wasn\'t a fault that killed the alternator, but battery and electrics are all good.
