What are your opinions on both these statements?:

NOTE • Hydrostatic lock is caused by the entry of substantial amounts of water into the engine through the air intake system and subsequent contamination of the fuel system. Hydrostatic lock most frequently occurs during or just after fording. Water is forced into the air intake system, drawn into the engine, and effectively "locks-up" the engine.

Hydro-Lock

Hydrostatic lock, hydraulic lock, hydro-lock  or hydro-lock occurs when liquids enter an engine cylinder.
This can occur from a coolant, oil or fuel leak,
but the chief cause is drawing water into the engine through the air induction system
(air filter, intake manifold). Internal combustion engines must employ a compression stroke to compress the charge.
Liquids are incompressible; the presence of a liquid in the engine cylinder during the compression stroke generates destructively high cylinder pressures.

Abnormally high cylinder pressures can bend and break pistons, piston pins, connecting rods, crankshafts and ruin bearings and can crack or break cylinder heads and engine blocks. Small amounts of liquids may pass through an engine cycle without causing damage. Hydro-lock may occur while the engine is running, the work of the compression stroke being supplied by engine\'s rotational inertia. Or a liquid may leak into the cylinder while the engine is being stored;
the work of the compression stroke will be supplied by the starter motor.

LOL wrong post for the wrong forum buddy. Rotary\'s don\'t have rods nor can they hydro-loc. Any water that enters the combustion chamber will flow straight through. Now if a really excessive amount goes in, the only thing that will happen is the engine will bog down to the point it stops running. Once you remove all the water from with-in the engine, the engine will fire right back up and be fine.

Heres my humble opinion once more. The swept volume of one lobe on the rotary is 201cc, the compression ratio is 9:1, therefore the combustion chamber including squish is 25cc approximately.A can of coke is 330ml,3/4 of that is 247.5ml. 1ml=1cc. You stick 250ml into 25cc and something has got to go.The opinion that rotarys don\'t suffer hydraulic locking is(in my opinion),BOLLACKS!! They have,at top dead cente, a fully closed combustion chamber. At that point, before ignition(yes I know, its already fired by then but just for theorys sake), the combustion chamber pressure is 132psi. Stick a fuel/air ratio into the mix and light it at the right time and you have cylinder/combustion chamber pressures of going on for a thousand psi-momentarily-(someone correct me if I,m wrong) then stick boost from the turbo into the equation. The point here is that air is compressible and the rotor will fire and move on with the expansion of the gases, the seals hold this pressure in the engine at that point. If you try to compress coke or water or even cat.... the engine will hydraulic whether its a rotary, 4stroke or 2stroke and something expensive will break. So, to summarise, the major reason not to put coke, water, cat/elephant/hippo.... into an engine is this:-An engine rebuild is THREE AND A HALF GRAND!!!!!

haha, well said!

The coke will come out round the insulating rubbers of the injectors.

I managed to completly flud a 13b (dont ask how)  Was sure I had a fuel leak as after it was cranked over I would have fuel poring out underneath!  After a lengthy deflood procedure and oil change, all was good.

Did I mention that I managed to flood a ....roen? I achieved this magnificent feat by totally ignoring the wise words of my better half(as in \'Don\'t drive through there you idiot, its too deep\')and promptly driving into 21/2feet of water. The ....ing thing stopped never to go again, mind you the expression on my missis\' face said it all- along the lines of \'YOU DICKHEAD!!!!\' Well I always was an impetuous type!!!

Hey Bob,

you\'ve fully answered my question, It shocks me that some people in the States have done this to there Rotary!

Many thanks

They are americans.... they shoot themselves when at war. they elected Bush as president. they lend over 5 times your income to rednecks... pouring coke into their car seems pretty senisble if you consider this :evillaugh

True True lol :yes

Bob Monkhouse

Sorry but you\'re wrong there waddock. The americans don\'t shoot each other the ....ers shoot our lads \'Sorry dude but we fly so high to keep out of range of anything that we can\'t make out who is friend or foe so we just shoot anyway and hope for the best\'. The american and british ground forces in the second world war called the usaf \'the american luftwaffe\' cos they were always bombing the allies. On a lighter note, did you know that a wassock was a wig for a bald minge? Its a good job my eyesight is stiil good or who knows???? Oh my real name is Bob Monkhouse so I\'ve heard \'em all before!!!!!!!

I think this water cleanup isn\'t chucking large amounts of liquid into the engine all in one go - at 4000RPM, the engine will be cycling through the rotors at 1/3 of this - so say abot 1300 combustion events per rotor face.  By opening up a vac pipe and letting the engine ingest this water over a minute or two - it\'s not much water per cycle that\'s getting sucked in.

I\'d be reticent to go as far as sucking liquid straight in like this - proper atomisation of the water is what\'s needed - water injection - it\'s something that is done already.  The amounts and time he\'s talking about are about double what you\'d expect with water injection whilst on boost.

There is a vid somewhere on MRC of this being done.

How long would the hosepipe have to be?
