Can anyone help.

We\'re planning a trip to Germany in Feb and i\'m looking into the best way of sorting out a bit of a safety net just in case the worse happens. Its just sods law that i drop a tip in a different country (when my German isn\'t too hot) At the moment AA are not being too helpful, the best they can do is get it towed to a local garage and pay too supply parts??? Which is handy in the case of an Rx7 that tbh i would not let your garden Mechanic anywhere near...

I know there are people who go to the Ring on a regular basis so i thought it would be a good place to start. So what do you guys do?? Or is it a seat of the pants type insurance :)

So any ideas?????

Thanks.
Chris

Also out of interest, has anyone done a beginners Guide to getting to the ring? i.e. what you need, best insurance, breakdown cover etc???

I have ADAC cover but had some issues with them this year at the ring due to what cover i thought i was getting, compared to what cover i got.
To cut a long story short, i got the top package from ADAC (about 80 EUR IIRC) and all sorted fine before trip.
The problem started when both a friend and I needed to use them. He blew a coil pack on the way to the ring (in Germany though) and called them up hoping for some assistance. They came (6hrs later) to him and then said that they can\'t fix that on the road and all they can do is take him to the nearest Toyota (he got a Supra) dealer 50miles in the wrong direction as that was the closest in that area!! They refused to take him home/to the \'Ring or out of Germany, so he flew home and had to wait (2weeks) for the repairs and then flew back out to collect it.
They advised too that you can get a rental car if you use them, this is not the case if you\'re not a German Citizen as my mate found out at 6am after over 24hrs of travleing! My issue was that i crashed on the \'ring, drove off ok but needed towing from the carpark to our hotel/home/garage... i was told they can only take me to a dealer (yeah right!!) or a local garage, where if they couldn\'t fix it, it needed to be put on their trailer and then shipped back to UK with other cars (they do this about 1-2 times every 2 weeks) and didn\'t really want to leave my car as my friend did, so i arranged for it to be trailered home...

So in short - ADAC are good for getting you out of a ditch and taking you somewhere but from then on you are screwed. To be fair with them though as i did stay one extra night in Germany waiting for the trailer to come from UK they did pay me back for that night with the reciept i gave them, and they did pay for my mates fight home from Germany but not back to pick it up...

After speaking to a few that have had many crashes in Germany a few have ADAC and AA/RAC. ADAC for getting off the \'ring and then AA/ADAC to bring you home, but if your not going that way RAC/AA i think will be you best bet as will get you home with your car...

i have Adac cover and AA,  they are the only ones that can recover you from the ring. They cover the whole of Europe and other countries. Its about 70e for the year.  You only need to go to europe twice and you have recovered the cost over adding weekend euro cover to your AA.

There are several ways to get to the ring depending if you want to go motorway most of the way or a more rural route and also which crossing you take. Not sure where you northerners will land.

Just make sure you have your EU medical card and take a high vis jacket and bulb set if you are driving in france.  Take some tools and i always take a proper spare as you dont want a puncture to cut short your track time cos you only have a take me home wheel,

Most importantly,   dont try and drive quickly until you have a few laps under your belt.  Do one slow sight seeing lap and common sense will soon make you realise that you will not remember the corners and hopefully not try and go to quickly too soon.

Can\'t go wrong with this site...(http://www.nurburgring.org.uk/) have arrange 3 trips to the \'Ring taking around 20 PPl each time and this site had all info i needed.

As for breakdown as said above... but never got insurance and still crashed this year, just had a very large bill to pay! (around 6k total - inc car/track damage)
I have a breakdown map of directions if you want it... let me know and will dig it out for you and send it on...

Will also reccomend http://www.hotel-an-der-nordschleife.de/hotel/ (speak to Eddy if he still owns the place (he was selling))for down in town, 50meters from the track - could see the cars from my bed - also next to half way gates or //www.pension-muehlenhardt.de (speak to Edgar) for a quiet localtion in the hills (within the track) and about 5 mins walk from town, or talk to Edgar to give you a lift and back if not too late...

Stayed in both and Very happy with service/roooms everything! :D

My advice, learn the track on the playstation or xbox.  It won\'t prepare you for the undulations and cambers but it will give you an idea of speeds to take the corners.  Assume every corner is a late apex, this way you won\'t get \'as\' caught out by some of the sharper corners that drop away or tighten at the very last minute.  Don\'t even think about doing a fast lap until you have done a few laps.  Don\'t time your laps but take a passenger to record it on video and time the recording, this way you won\'t be tempted to make any time up and potentially crash.

If it\'s wet it\'s slippery, no one cares if you go slowly, trust me you\'ll scare yourself regardless of what speed you do.

I spun and hit the armco and my bro spun off at 90mph one year and 60 the next.  Both times able to limp home but that was just luck.

Take care and have a great trip! you\'ll love it mate.

6k OMG :o   that was a pretty serious \'off\'  I went at easter last year instead of the summer and it was snowing heavily.   When it stopped, they cleared the track and opened it,  got half way round and it was snowing again,  went round a corner just before Adanau and had to go down a steep hill now covered in snow,  I was doing 5mph with the abs on and the car wouldnt stop gliding down the hill. Eventually put it on the grass verge backwards and stopped after spinning a few times (very slowly), nothing more than a scuff thankfully.

Thanks for the info.

I am not going to go mad, i\'m going early on when the weather is not too hot so i can get used to the track a bit without screwing up some ones fast lap :)

I am visiting friends at the same time but it would be rude to take the FD that close to the ring and not go on.

Ollie, is that your number (0208 3645500) i have just been asked by a mate about insurance for his Fd, is that the sort of thing you do?? if so i\'ll pass your number on.

If you crash you should remain stationary as you may drop fluids onto the track.  They weren\'t best pleased when my brother limped round half the circuit with half a car

Yeah, it\'s VERY frustrating when someone does that and shuts the track down. Last time I was there, there was a touring car race on the day before, guy in a biodiesel 1-series spun it into the armco and split his endurance tank open.

Carried on driving, dumped 60 litres of fuel all through Adenau. There was that much absorbent powder down you couldn\'t see any of the writing on track, and it was shut for most of the day after.
