can anyone tell me would an incorrectly fitted distributer cap and leads affect power in the engine,ie mine starts fine but has no power when accelerator is depressed, revs drop off at about 4500-5000 rpm.Car in question- gen2,1988 non turbo.

putting the leads on the wrong way would certainly do that yes.

If you take a look on the rotor housings and the top of the dizzy cap they are all labeled  T1, L1 etc.

the front rotor is no. 1 and the rear no. 2  and there is a T and an L cast into the housing near the plugs. so match up the T\'s and L\'s with the correctly labeled connection on the cap.

eg.  plug with T next to it on front rotor goes to T1 etc. etc.

Hope that helps

my 88 definately has a dizzy cap, anyhow i have checked leads and cap and all r ok .Have now found out that power isnt running through the throttle sensor correctly, checked it with a dc meter and it seems to be running fully shut all the time.Im assuming this would account 4 loss of power and rev shut down when accelerator is floored. Now the cruddy bit- £165 4 a new one straight from mazda with 3-4 weeks delivery !!.Is there a way of re-conditioning this part?,cant find a second hand one anywhere!,£165 is a lot to pay when im not 100% sure it will cure my problem!.Any ideas out there, still desperate as ive had car 4 3 months and still not been able to drive it yet!!!!.
cheers, exup13.

What does it look like ? the tps is pretty much standard across the mazda range

Hi Mike,

TPS is black oblong box about 1 1/2" long with cylindrical push button on one side about 1 1/2" long again.  All on a small black bracket that screws underneath throttle body.  There are three wires coming out of opposite end to push button with a white 3 pin block connector at the end.  Colours of wires are green with red stripe, solid orange and black with red stripe.  Code number stamped on oblong box is 7Y13 also part no. underneath is EWT AUA 8703.

Have read on some of the American RX7 sites that it is possible to regulate these by turning a screw on it but mine has no screw!  Seems to be a solid enclosed unit.

Cheers
