Ok... Assume I\'ve just finished rebuilding my engine.

What do people recommend with regards to running it in?

I\'ve read some people don\'t bother, where others religiously do.

What\'s the general thought on this?

Hi RX7

I\'ve just had mine re-built by Re-Worx and for the first 500 miles I\'m pulling away carefully and not exceeding 4K revs wise and ensuring that it warms up fully I am also trying my best to keep off boost and so far only gone up just over zero once I\'ve done 500 I\'ll phone Geff and get his advice. Very carefully checking oil and water before every trip and making sure I go for at least a 30 minute drive.

No boost and maximum of say 4k rpm, then after about 500 miles perhaps 5k rpm etc you need to let all the seals and things settle, not running an engine in is a bit like thrashing an engine from cold, it will work ok, but won\'t last as long

As far as i am aware you always run in a rotary, only piston engine can you do a hard run in.
Also it will partly down to whever you got new housing or not.

Will you be posting pictures of the rebuild it self? Would be nice to have a write up on this to run along my DIY-RE 13B dvds when I start on mine.

don\'t be too gental with them, they needs verging load on the engine.
At the end of the day the housings have what looks like a nickelseal (sp) lining, so doing damage is going to be very hard.
When ever I have run 2 stroke engines in I had just upped the revs in stages but still given the engine a good load accelerating upto the desired rev point, taking it a little bit further each run. As recomended by many race tuners of 2 strokes.
Warm her up properly though!

WHat\'s the minimum run in mileage you could get away with??

interloper393

with your luck jim it wont matter lol..
if it wer me id fone a tuner and ask them, everyone a tell you something different, when mine was first rebuilt i was told 1500miles and first 500 3k 2nd 500 5k 3rd 500 6k then let rip, but this was almost 3 years ago lol

For a full rebuild (lapped plates, new housings & seals) I would normally be looking at 1000 miles for the run in period.  Its important to vary the revs and engine load, no point doing a 100 mile run in at motorway speed in 5th.

take it up to knockhill race track for a 1000miles lol..

i think now most say 1000miles is fine bud with a new engine, on a previous thread it was said 800 miles and 4.5k limit..

I had a new 2004 fireblade and was told 500mile runin under 5k, first 100 wer, did a oil change then caned the crap out of it lol, bike was faster for it hehe

How about for a block that\'s simlpy getting the seals replaced etc? Mine was rebuilt 3K miles ago and its looking like a case of water seal failure at the moment.

civicboy28

if its just seals just take it easy and keep an Eye on everything for the first few miles. then your good to go.
running in is to get rid of all the high spots in left by the maching processes.

Why is it (piston car) any new cars Ive ever had have been driven hard from new and others say a new car driven hard will always be nippier than one driven in slowly??

karl_tate

that is true gary, when i got a new car i didnt bother running it in it was was fast for what it was, my mate also did the same and could keep up with faster cars.

it must be something to do with the bedding in process of the rings??
