Am I correctly informed that you can remove the airpump and just get a shorter belt and run with the standard water pump and alternator pullies.. I have always been led to believe before you need special pullies??

Can someone please confirm and let me know the risks of staying on the standard pulley setup??

Thank you

You can just run a shorter belt, its okish, but most people go for double pullies, simply because of the added safety, if the shortened pully snapped or came loose the water pump wouldn\'t be pumping and everything will overheat causing £££s of damage lol so you can run stock pullys, but its best to invest a bit more in duel pullies than to overheat :)

yep you got it right, saves alot of weight getting rid of it but it is there for a reason, pumps air into the exhaust system to bring emission levels down, so if you get rid of it you will have alot higher emissions and will prob not pass a MOT test

Thanks... for the info.. Why is the belt more likely to snap if it\'s shorter?? Surely the same thing ould happen with the stock setup and airpump? I thought the reasn was something to do with correcting the water pump and alternator gearing after removing the airpump? Although I can\'t see why they should be different from removing a pulley? I\'d have to think on that! I know the job of the air pump- it\'s an MOT cheat! Lots of people remove them.. presumably you have to if you are going with a single turbo setup anyway? is there no way of mapping the fueling better at low rpm so the emissions are not so bad?

The main issue is the belt contact on the water pump pulley. The under drive pulley kit is a good option to increase belt contact but it also under runs the alternator and water pump.

If you remove the air pump with a cat still on it goes bad very quickly.

You will need a PFC too to allow for remapping to match the better flow through the exhaust and to ignore the error from the pump sensor.

Okay.. so it\'s nothing to do with gearing.. it\'s the fact the angle of the belt has changed and reduces the contact area?? what is the underdrive kit?? is that basically putting a dummy pulley where the airpump once was?? I have heard of them but not seen one fitted on a car?
Regarding ecu and stuff.. I am going single turbo and have a power fc to fit! so planning to  do it all in one hit. just need to make sure I have all the parts I need!

Thanks

I found a seemingly very rare piece of kit today. An air pump removal idler pulley.. Basically you take off your airpump and bolt this puppy on it\'s place. Solves the contact area issues! Think I might get one! or better still get one made for half the price!

It was on ebay and I can\'t find the listing now!! I tried searching all sorts and it\'s disappeared. I can\'t even find any such thing in existance on the interweb?? I think it was an HKS part.. Bugger!! I\'ll find it don\'t worry!

I saw part on ebay myself. Looked a very easy piece to fabricate (was layed in 3 peices) - Was a r shaped bracket that fit onto the standard airpump mountpoints then with an idle pulley on the end of it.
I woof in your general direction.

leeroy_25

Maybe you saw a simliar part.. The pictures I saw were the assembled item!

I havent found it since.. but I found this and it\'s that sort of affair. I think i\'ll either get something fabbed up or find out the sizes on this part to see if it will be compatible or a base for modification?
Item number: 140278220054 (auction has now ended but you can till see it)
Anyone up for something like this if I can get it fabbed? I\'ll try and get some measurements and CAD something up at the weekend. Soon as I can i\'ll do some screen shots! Don\'t know why I ddn\'t think of it before when it\'s so obvious! Mainly because everyone goes on about getting underdrive pulley kits and so on.

Did you ever get this fabbed up pal?

leeroy_25
