Can anyone offer any advice...

I\'m stripping a knackered engine and need some special tools to lock the flywheel (Part no. 49 F011 101 in Mazda workshop manual) and the counterweight (Part no. 49 1881 055A). Local Mazda dealer has been less than helpful. :(
Does anyone know where I can get hold of these or has made them themselves and can impart some wisdom.

Thanks in advance.

I\'ve locked the flywheel with a bit of chain and two bolts before now.

Never needed to lock the counterweight though, what are you doing?

What he said ^ Think last time I just jammed the counterweight with a socket?

the above ways of locking it silly, get a engine valve, bend it at 90 degrees and put it in one of the end plate holes and the round end will fit nice into the flywheel teeth.
the 54mm nut will be done up very tight, very.

Thanks for the advice.
I\'d still like to get hold of a proper tool for the job tho, bit nervous about damaging the flywheel.

how can it do damage, its locked in between the teeth.
better not use the starter motor to start the car then, that does damage to the teeth aswell.

ive done this a few times now, its better than using a screw driver or a chain to lock it in place.

the starter wont damage the fly as the teeth are perfectly meshed and constructed to fit the flywheel  perfectly arent they. made for the job you could say? unlike say for example a valve lol. plus the flywheel isnt locked in postion when starting the car is it, or having to force against 200lbft of torque, so that a bit of a daft statement to make.  and those flwheels are on seriously tight and you may damage the end plate hole its in, or the end plate itself. i managed to bend a half inch thick, foot long screw driver when i removed my flywheel.

id just hold out for the appropriate tool. or get one made, or even knock yourself one up. should be easy enough.

Chain and bolt it in 2 places on the FW and 1 (or more) on the engine - its totally fine.

I did the same with the counter weight :

I have the 54mm socket and teeth holder, got them both from ebay, socket was about £5 and the holder came from the States for about £10. Well worth the money.

Do you have a link to the teeth holder you bought mate?

I had fun moving the smaller bolt on the other side of the crank last week. I convinced myself it should come off with a half inch drive breaker bar with a pipe. I managed to break two brand new breaker bars, a normal socket, an impact socket, and also an impact adapter socket to use the 3/4 breaker bar! by that time I figured it might be worth just finding a 19inch 3/4 drive socket :)
As for holding the crank the teeth holder sound practical but unnecessary seeing as half the world just uses a chain without problems.

Im offended mate, i really am. I lent you my home made flywheel locking tool, and you went and did you own thing:spank

Only joking bud, you rebuilt yours yet?

Ricco_04

Yeah it\'s been built for ages (well the short block has)  I\'ve bagged it up for a while.  Want to have a go on it again and get the engine fully dressed while its cold and crappy outside.

The flywheel stuff was done a couple of years ago mate!!!! :2eek

I put a screwdriver through one of the holes on the flywheel to stop it moving. Sat on the block and yanked like a mofo with a 1/2" breaker bar.

It finally came off... I did think the breaker bar was going to snap though!
