Where\'s it coming from??

Hi guys...

Drove my FD over here to Germany a fortnight ago, and whilst having some fun with a Maserati, my car decided to turn into a Red Arrow. Here\'s a pictorial representation:

Anyway. Apart from it being the "most spectacular thing" my mates have ever seen without an engine eating itself, it\'s running ok - save for a bit of a misfire and a now temperamental primary turbo.

Pip has said it\'s probably blown turbos, so they\'re being replaced soon, but it seems to be dropping a fair bit of oil after using them at the moment.

Any ideas where it\'s coming from? Seems to be dropping below the turbos mostly, so could it be leaking from a feed pipe or out of the cores? Just trying to figure out if I need to replace any more pipes, as I\'m a bit limited on garage space here. :3Confused

memski

lol sorry haven\'t got a clue but I have to commend you for that photoshop, made me chuckle anyway.

I\'m a convicted serial photoshopper. :(

could several reasons
1. turbo/turbos could be letting oil by, and will if really bad be drink lots of oil, so be careful it does not disappear too quickly and your running on no oil. Turbo rebuild time.
2. Could be an oil leak, but doubt it as a leak that bad would eventually catch light and would have to be excessive to give off clouds of smoke.
3. If you have a catch can, if the oil breather pipe running to it has got/been twisted it cant breath properly and pressure will force oil through turbo.

Martiny

More likely the oil injectors are leaking. I had this problem before. The injectors are on that side. The oil collects on top of the housing, and then starts to run down near the turbos.

If its the bottom of the turbos leaking, then the gaskets for the oil return lines need replacing.

FDAsh

Ok thanks guys. Will check those bits out today.

When the turbo let go, it dumped a load of oil through the engine, and shot some out from the DV when I saw the smoke and came off WOT.

It\'s not burning a lot more than normal, just seems to drip out after I\'ve used the turbos. If I drive off them, there\'s not so much, sooo I\'m thinking oil injectors as it seems to be pressure related.

Hopefully new turbo pack will arrive on Monday and I can get them fitted the weekend after :yes

pearl_rex

yeah this happened when mine blew mate, plenty of oil in the intercooler and oil would pour out of the turbo\'s themselves! very nice :) lol fitting the turbos is easy enough though!

AtomicRex

Are you saying you are red leader??  Fantastic photo.

I think you will find that the turbos are the key here.  A broken turbo is the sort of smoke screen the A-Team would be impressed with!

FDAsh

:rollin at A-Team comments. Yes, I am Red Leader.

Here\'s a pic of a fresh Rex Kotex. Imagine looking from the front of the car, this was under the engine. Seems to confirm turbo leaking oil down the downpipe, some from the back of the engine and a bit at the front.

So should I upend the intercooler and empty it when I do the turbos tomorrow?

pearl_rex

i had to when i did mine, was rammed full of oil, also had shards of turbo blades in it! :) better have a look just incase! better to be safe than sorry!

Had a something like that on my old RS Turbo the oil seals and bearings went on the turbo, had a big james bond smoke screen coming out of the back. There was a pop and a bang then it was new turbo time!!!! when driving off boost the smoke was no where near as bad.

Ok, so today didn\'t happen as planned.

Went down to the Rotary Guy here in Bavaria, he\'s spent most of the day with the car but said he didn\'t think it was turbos.

So they\'ve not been replaced. Has checked the sparks, all of which burn nicely, and replaced front and rear oil seals together with the rear static gear bearing - that was mullered.

Everything says the car is ok, no vacuum fluctuation on idle or whatever, 6 good swooshes when you turn the engine over with no sparks.

But it still doesn\'t feel right. Seems to be missing, and has some nasty flat spots when you put your foot down. It\'s just not as smooth as it was before the oil cloud.

I recorded the exhaust as I was putting it to bed tonight, no smoke/coolant as you can see. Starts up ok when warm but can be a little temperamental, idle dropping to under 700 sometimes.

What\'s that sound like to you? Doesn\'t sound happy to me. :(

m1tch

Looks like you need an oil change anyway cause thats rather dark looking oil lol

FDAsh

Oil was done less than three weeks ago, under 1500 miles, and has been draining nicely through the rear seal since :rollin

It\'s just the pic that makes it look black. It\'s actually clean. But I doubt the oil is the root of my problems...
