my Rexx came with a rather nice greddy boost and temp gauge, however the temp gauge has never worked, nor the lights to either one so i took the dashboard apart today ( first holiday this year yippee) and i think the butcher who fitted the CD player, and front lights, for the previous owner has been at work ( how do i add pictures as its kinda hard to explain there is a data unit which has a lead from the gauge and at the other side of it two sets of wires, one of  which seems to tap into the existing wiring sort of figured that the black is earth and white is live feed for lighting, but lost on what the red and orange wire go as they have been snipped off behind the CD player and i assume the other dark grey lead goes to a temp pickup somewhere on the cooling circuit perhaps near the rad, any help or pointing in the right direction gratefully recieved guys, thanks in advance for all info recieved:Hammer

Hurm, too many questions :D! I\'ll have a go at some of them, though. The balck is earth, the orange red and white are all various live feeds with different purposes, but I cant remember which does which. They are basically power for the gauge, power for the light, and one to dim the gauge backlight when you turn the car lights on IIRC, but like I say, not sure which is which. When I had these older style GReedy gauges on mine, I think all the wires went into the same live for simplicity cos I frankly didnt care whether the gauge lights were on all the time or for that matter whether they dimmed with the headlights or not!

Seeing the thread on your headlight probs, it looks like the butcher who mangled the wiring for those may well have mangled your gauge wiring too, may take a bit of sorting out. I\'d suggest using a multimeter rather than randomly plugging wires in to see what happens, cause the bulbs and wiring in those gauges is very fragile, and its real easy to blow bits of them up. I speak from bitter experience here!

The grey is indeed the sender wire; if they used the original factory take off (assuming its water temp) its down on the housing somewhere IIRC. Otherwise, look for a sensor tapped into a water hose or a sleeve union in the hose with a take-off

Your lights will fail the MOT btw, unless you gat creative with the masking tape or haev a very tame MOT tester! HTH

Orange = switched 12v (ign)
Red = 12v
White = light feed

cheers for the info guys so thats white tapped into my lighting circuit red permanent live and the orange switched with the ignition, yea i think the wiring was hacked at by an ex axe murderer LOL:2Rolleyes heard differant stories about the MOT man and lights will just have to get creative with the tape and see what happens still not due til,next march, so plenty of time to find a really nice MOT man, last time i MOTed the skyline bugger failed it on the sunstrip and then said that if i allowed them to do the work (take off sunstrip) there would be no retest fee:rolleyes: bloody cheek, didnt use them again

meant to ask guys as well, why does it need a constant 12V feed ? and the two buttons on the front of the gauge one says warning, presume this tells me if it starts to overheat, what does the other one do ? how do i set them up to alarm me ( what does the gauge do flash sound off or what ? just started giggling to myself must be tired or something, remember the robot in lost in space DANGER WILL ROBINSON DANGER!!!!!) and more importantly what should i set the temp at to alarm i thiought about 85/90F does that sound about ball park :D

Oh, right, sounds like you\'ve the later sort of gauge, I obviously misunderstood your first post when you said about the "data unit". That should be a kinda grey/black placcy box about the size of a fag packet, yeah? You can adjust it to have the "warning" light on the gauge set to where you want it to come on, there\'s a tiny little screw adjuster on the data unit box somewhere. The actual tiny buttons on the Gauge are probably marked "Memory" and "Reset" if you look closely. The one recalls the highest value that the gauge has measured since last reset, and the other, well, it resets it!

I\'m assuming they\'re the same as mine, if that\'s the case thats how they work anyway! You can see from this (not very good) photo how the water temp warning lights set to come on at just above 90` to remind me to put the aircon on and have the rad fan at double speed. Like I said, you adjust this setting using the little grey control box.

p.s. sorry about getting the wiring slightly muddled in the first place, I thought you had the earlier version of these gauges, which were the ones I had before these which didnt have the memory and warning functions.

so let me see if i\'ve understood mate, somewhere on the "fag packet is an adjuster screw to set the alarm/warning and the other is reset, so then does it need constant 12V feed to keep its memory ?, just been out to the car and the "fag packet seems to have two adjusters ( how do i put up a picture ?):D

Nik da Greek

Sorry, not doing a very good job here! The two little buttons on the GAUGE are "Reset" and "memory".

The "memory" shows the highest peak value reached,

the "reset" clears that value from the memory

The point at which the "Warning" light comes on is set by adjusting the little tiny screw on the control unit box.

Can\'t remember what the other screws for, you\'ll have to jog my memory, my cars in the shop atm, so can\'t go and check!

Yes, I presume it needs constant power feed to keep its settings and memory alive

Can\'t post pictures unless you\'re a full member, you have to use a hosting service like Photobucket.

Have we covered everything! :D

yep all done and dusted mate thanks for all the help, it was as usual very much appreciated, the actual warning can be set by rotating the lower prong thing that sits at the front just under the memory prong thingy, dont know why but after i\'d finished wiring up the lights and put everything back together, the boost gauge now shows as + 0.3 bar instead of being sort of horizontal at rest when you fite up the engine it seems to work fine showing boost and vacuum but when i turn off the engine it goes back upi to +0.3 bar strange eh !!:Giggle
