Quick question about the default fog lights on the early jap FDs...

Did the \'92 FD come with front fogs?  As my car came with the full C1 bodykit, I\'ve got no front fogs on my car, but i\'ve got 3(!) fog light switches inside the car.  Two are proper FD switches, mounted in the gearshift surround, and the third is a cheap+nasty rocker switch thats been mounted on a switch blanking plate.

Currently, all three switches appear to be wired up, but only the cheap-n-nasty switch actually does anything (turns on the driver-side rear brake light - presume thats meant to be the fog light).  The other two switches don\'t appear* to do anything.

Anyway - if the 92 FD came with front fogs, that would explain one of the switches - leaving me to find out where the cables go, so that I can swap the rear fog to a \'proper\' switch, and dump the rocker...

* I\'ve had a quick walk around the car with the switches on (and the lights one) but couldn\'t see anything

Are you sure one the switches on the centre console isnt your heated rear screen guv?

Ive got the front fogs on the console (again after market front bumper so dont know if they were standard, but presume so), and a nasty flick switch on the dash for the rears.

nope - defo two fog light switches - there is a heated rear-screen switch next to them!  (although, now that you mention it, I might get the multi-meter out and check the cables to confirm the heated rear switch actually works :D)

on the gearshift surround, the three switches across the middle are: heated rear screen, LED for alarm, and fog light.  the two switches next to the ashtray are: fog light, and rocker-switch (working foglight).

I should add that I think they are (or were) foglight switches because they have the little foglight icon on them - no other reason ;)

mine has 3 (OEM) switches in a row - rear screen heater, and 2 fogs, neither of which do anything, cos I\'ve got the dodgy rocker switch somewhere else to turn the rear fog on

Never heard of two fog light switches on the centre console - only one, which is for the front fogs which were standard (But are usually removed when fittign a new front bumper)

Are they both connected to wiring? Maybe someone just replaced a blanking plate with a fog light switch?

logicalChimp

yup - all switches (inc. both fogs) are connected to wiring.  As i\'ll be digging through the wiring anyway at the weekend (fitting new headunit), i\'ll be testing / tracing the wires, see where they go...

Ideally, I want to remove the current rocker-switch, and move the rear fog to one of the \'proper\' fog switches...

The early jap fd\'s only have 1 foglight switch as long as there are actual forglights up front, the only other switch is the rear screen. The 2 by the ashtray are usually the check engine light and heat light.

Hi - i\'m not talking about the check-lights above the cigar lighter, but the actual on/off switches next to the ashtray on the gearshift surround (the bit between the seats, on top of the transmission tunnel) :D

I have two fog light and the rear heater switches on my centre console, near the gearstick and ashtray etc. One was the front fogs and the other the rear, but I\'ve never seen another one like it, and nor has anyone else I asked! The car had lots of odd things like that, like the rear fender reflectors (by the wheel arches) used to light up, for example. The annoying thing is, when I wrecked my first Fd and had all the good bits swapped into a new shell, it came with a rear fog on a dodgy rocker switch velcroed to the dash! When it goes in to sort the alarm wiring next month, I\'ll get it wired back into the centre console switch.

None of which is relevant to the original question. Yes, some cars had two fog switches for front and rear, but I can only assume the rear was either an optional extra at point of sale or only used for certain domestic markets where rear fogs are compulsory

From memory, there is a rear fog light switch on the centre console and next to it a switch for the little useless foglights in the bumper opening on imported cars.....plus the heated rear screen switch

Im talking about the centre console, the buttons right next to the ashtray. The american cars have their check engine light and heat warning lights by the ashtray, imports dont have a check engine light. On the imports they are just blanked off, or on some other later cars, you have 2 coinholders.

The only cars to originally come with 2 fog light switches is the uk spec version with the rear foglights either side of the number plate. If you have 2 fog swithces, You can tell if they are the original switches because the symbols will be different...1 for the front, different symbol for the rear.

Yeah, but only on yank cars. On imports they are either blanking plates, or 2 coin holders.

In a UK model you get the back demister, fogs and headlights washer if I remember correctly

logicalChimp

Ahhh - gotcha

Actually, once I got the gearshift surround up, and got one of the switches out, it was fairly clear it wasn\'t original (or at least, had been \'fixed\' after) by the copious amount of glue-stick all over it - the underside of the switch just looked like a giant white snot-ball :D

Still, it wasn\'t actually connected to anything (other than one of the dead cables I wanted to remove - yay) so i\'ve managed to remove the glue\'d up bit (kept the top-part tho, just to fill the hole in the console).

I take it Mazda would be the best place to try and source a new switch?
