Whats the best thickness for a IC in v mount. I see people using ones from 2-4 inch thick so is it thicker the better.

batman

its not just the thickness davy if the intercooler is to big you wont get compression from the turbos they need to compress the air to give boost

What are you on about...

i assume hes talking about pressure drops across ICs lol

I am using high flow twins at the mo but am going single, To4z or 500R turbo. Does the thicker the intercooler give you better cooling.

Dr-Rotor

If you want out right cooling install water injection. Im not sure on the size effecting cooling but it dose affect CFM rate.

I am only asking because when you look at all the intercoolers for sale the thickness range fron 2-5 inch thick, the Apexi is 4inch and suppost to be the best so is thicker better or is it just the design of the fins that matter. As i said its for a custom v mount as my fm just doesn\'t cool my temps down.
I do have WI but i want it to at least cool down on a run of boost. Its on a 99spec front .

Ed_RX7

the apexi is actually 5 inches thick!

What temps do you see off boost? I have a Greddy FMIC & see temps depending on weather & seson anywere from 20c to 30c some times even 35c only in stand still traffic on a 28c day in summer with high humidity.

Im unsure but I think the thickness will to some point cool it more as the air has to move through more depth of alloy fins...same as a thicker radiator, more capacity. IE: with a thick rad you can get more water in it as with a thicker IC you can get more air in it...good for higher flowing turbos. I think you will only ever get the air as cool as the ambient temp out side without WI on boost.

How is your intake setup? If your intake gets mass amounts of cold air without the heat of the radiator affecting it that will already help out without the need for a thicker IC.

davyv

My temps about 45-55 around town but it only goes down to at the best 40 on a run.

Dr-Rotor

What IC do you have @ the moment? How is it all setup? Post a pic, I may be abel to give you & better opinion with a pic.

Also do you have a vented hood?

subject change here.... what turbos are you running when you say high flow..... 99 spec, knightsport, etc??
