Anyone ever done this to their engine, what might the pitfalls be and experiences on miles/timescales before fault/tips are worn down enough that the problem is resolved ?

...and of course any horror stories or would you just replace them? :2eek

Errrrrrrrrr, needs to be rebuilt my man, more driving will cause more damage and the resulting rebuild will be even more expensive :2eek

not in all cases Gurj, depends how bad they are warped, you can put a few more hundred miles and they wear even again. if they are only warped and not chipped then no futher damage will be caused.
My advice is get it compression tested, if they are even readings on all faces then you can carry on driving, if you get one definite one low reading then you probably chipped a seal

Engine was rebuilt and run in for 1000 miles. Boost switched on and then a cracked tip in 400 miles :reallymad
Tip replaced and then drove 200 miles running in. Boost switched on again and then 100 miles later the car started playing up. Thought the tip have cracked again but, advised the car is producing the same power figures when the boost was switched on after the first rebuild. The compression test is showing intermittant readings and the car is on a bridgeport which doesn\'t help.............now has problems starting when hot but ok when cold. What should I do as don\'t want another rebuild :3Confused

ohh bad luck there, where was it mapped? they should be able to give the afr readings if its been on the dyno to see if its lean or not and the power graph will be able to show if there is ignition breakup, really we need to find out whats cracking or warping your tips top stop it happening again, bridgeports wont give high compression readings anyway on the 250rpm test they do

As Mark has said, with that porting a compression test is next to useless really as it will always be low and wont show the engines strength.

Hot and cold starts could mean many things. As you know it will have more comp when cold.

Take it back to the person who rebuilt it ( if it was a garage )

Thanks for your comments and will ask for the AFR readings/ignition breakup but think they should be ok because when the car was originally mapped I took it back and paid £200 for a further map. Then took it back again for a free map after paying £500 for a tip replacement and was advised that now they had put a rev limiter and boost cut out to stop the tip cracking again........and then took it back and was told it was the way I was driving the car.....and on the same day told that the reason the engine was cutting out was because the radiator fans cutting in which was causing the engine to cut out (electrical)? That was the last time the car was mapped about 2 weeks ago and then as you know the engine started playing up :2Mad omg....

Car is at the garage and have advised that the oil pump may not have been doing its job as with some cars at this level of tuning and I should now really run premix.... Also someone pointed out the pulley setup may well be too small for the engine which may increase engine temps but, never ran the car over 95 degrees.

Any other ideas as to what I should do..................
