THIS WAS ROTORSTOCK 2004!! NOT 2005

Right, after speaking to men in the know doing the strip at rotorstock has cracked/snapped a seal so its rebuild time for me :(

No point crying about it. time to get on with it!

My choices are

Send it to Pip/Carl/Hurley after taking it out myself and stripping down to the block.

Rebuild it myself.

Rebuild it myself and get it ported.

Buy another engine. Then rebuild mine and keep it as a spare.

Personnally i would like to do the last option. But who supplies new ported engines, and how much are they? I assume i would need a mapable ecu, would i need anything else?

Mechanically i am skilled enough. I can spare up to £5k in a few weeks (but bang goes my respray and reline of the interior  )

What do you think guys?

Its possible to buy a whole new engine boxed and with a warrenty from some of the tuning houses in japan.  I could be dead wrong though!

you could speak to rx motors etc and try and get a 2nd hand engine and drop that in while you play about with the knackered one

If you get yours rebuilt I\'d reccomend getting some level of porting done while it\'s in bits.  A mild to medium street port won\'t alter driving characteristics much and will give you a good place to work from for more serious power gains if you choose to.

I used WGT and have nothing but good things to say about the quality of the work.  I\'ve heard the same of Carl (Hayward Rotary), rx-motors and re:worx.

Hope you get it sorted quickly!

Ok been speaking to Carl and Pip, thanks for the advice guys.

Definitley going to get it ported, thinking medium porting.

Apex seals so..what seals do you think?

Single turbo? Is this the time to go for it?

Would like to build as much as a picture up as possible and get as much info as i can. Before i spend any money whatsoever i want to know whats best for my engine and what sort of costing to expect?

Whats it like driving a single turbo compared to twins?

Sorry for all the questions but i am looking at spending a lot of money and want to get it right FIRST time...

If you are serious about pulling the engine yourself and want a hand I would more than happy to help you. I like you want to learn as much as possible, and I dare say Steve would be curious to.
Mines Black and dirtier than Donatos. But hey, no-one asked for a good clean fight.

Dont forget, if you go single turbo route you need to budget for aftermarket intercooler
fuel pump and injectors
ecu
uprated?upgraded clutch.
I have had a lot of help from Ross @ Dragon with the single turbo route and i also know he does a engine rebuild with porting for a bit over £2600.

Donato

I would really like to do it myself for the experience if its going to save me money that i can spend elsewhere on the car, like puting it towards a single turbo conversion.

Ok guys if i decided to do it myself then how much is it going to cost?

Could i still get it ported, then assemble myself...?
How much are housings (if required)
How much is the kit?
Anyother price i should know?

I think i am capable of fixing it myself as i have previous engine rebuilding experience albeit piston engines....

davefrith

if you\'ve bust a tip I\'d get new housings every time !

What power output are you aiming for? that really governs a) twins or single and b) what other stuff u\'ll need. Bare in mind that if u go single turbo at the same time u will be paying for a lot more than an engine; fuel system, labour for installation and tuning, intercooling, engine management etc etc. Add that lot to an engine rebuild (any thing between £2.5K and whatever u want to pay depending on spec/bits used) and its gonna be a BIG hit!

Speak to people who have set ups similar to those you are considering and see what they think about it.

A small single, or BB turbo will spool pretty quickly and not really give u \'worry-about-able\' lag - from cars I\'ve driven at least.

I have a friend who has been a mechanic all his life, like 30+ years. He bought an rx which then blew and decided to do it himself, by all accounts he will not do it again. Stick with the experts imho, they know them inside and out, literally.

Some engine builders use new rotor housings as a matter of course, others dont which obviously is reflected in the price. If you have damaged a tip and any part of it has left the groove in the rotor then you are looking at a new housing pretty much, doesnt take much to chew them up...

yeah its unlikely they would have survived unscathed

Cheaper is not always better

20b\'s question about what power you\'re shooting for is the key one.  You should be able to push the twins to mid 300\'s fly-wheel, possibly a bit more.

What\'s John making with his?

My personal dream/plan is to get a set of larger twins - basically like having 2 smallish singles.  Add to that a v-mount intercooler and some interesting ducting to get a cold air feed to the filters plus water injection and I\'ll have spend somewhere between 4 and 6k.  Will be interesting to see what power it makes.

I could go for more with a big single but the twins are part of the car\'s character to me!

Not going to happen until next spring at the earliest though (need the cash and to get used to the current power!)

Just checked the dyno results and John got 316 RWHP @ 5,500rpm on stock twins...
