Is this a stroke of genius or just plane crazy. Heat rises so this is why the intercooler get heat soaked at slow speeds and in traffic. Now i understand there maybe problems with this idea due to airlocks in the rad system. But surely it makes more sence to turn the vmount set up upside down so rad at the top and intercooler at the bottom. Just a thought as there could be plumbing prob and air in the coolant system issue. But atleat this way the riseing heat is just going to vent through a vented bonnet and not soak your cooler on the way.

Is jonny f still doing the kit as his e-mail link in the old thread isn\'t working....

I dont know mate, there were a few of us who asked for the kit and he replied as you can see in the thread.  I emailed him but if the emails not working then i dont know???

Just got back from filling my car up with BP Ultimate (cos the four shell garages i went to had ran out of VPower :reallymad ) £86 bleeding quid !!!!!!!

Heat soak after getting back in the car 76 degrees on factory sensor, 58 on the new one lol and 112 on water temp although water temp does come down instantly when starting the engine :)

Timmy made a valid point, and i myself have always wondered why the intercooler doesn\'t go at the bottom and the rad at the top on a V Mount setup???

So you havn\'t replaced the OEM Intake one just added a new sensor not linked to the ECU ( Which is what I have already done )

I want to replace the OEM one in the same place with one that is better than the OEM one.

No, at the moment i\'ve added a new stand alone sensor in the elbow just before the TB just to see what the factory sensor was doing.. I do want a new quicker sensor to replace the OEM one as basically it\'s crap and suffers from far too much heat soak and does not react quick enough...

Which is why i wanted the one that John F was offering... although i\'m fairly sure any sensor would do as long as it has similar resistance patterns to the OEM one, it would just be a case of mounting it, but this does not necessarily need to be in the OEM location....

Just reading through some threads about WI (don\'t want to spend too much, looks like Cooling Mist will do the job for me as a safety feature). I came across a similar thread about intake temps to this one, wondering what temps are safe:
http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=39557&highlight=water+injection

On there, it seems that into the 60s is OK and the PFC retards timing to compensate anyway (I assume depending on the map - mine\'s by Pip and as he\'s thought to be conservative, I presume that means plenty of fuel. Might ask him how he handles high intake temp settings).

So, if that\'s true, I don\'t really have a problem (some people in that thread talk about 80C+ intake temps!) - cooling will be better, but it\'s not such an engine safety issue as I\'m getting worried about.

Thoughts?

Lockwood if i remeber you run an arc set up. I\'ve just modified the stock airducting to supply air to the filter i would say it has made as much as 5degrees difference to air temp and the temps are droping alot faster too.

Warthog

When I did my Ram Air Intake mod using my Scoot bonnet it dropped the temps 15 degs...no heat soak as outside air.

Sounds interesting mate, do you have any pics of it?

At the moment, my airbox is just sitting taking air from near the underside of the bonnet!

I am also thinking about better ducting for my standard mount ARC intercooler (and radiator for that matter) - would be interested in pics of anyone doing that too.

What material(s) do people use for this ducting? Needs to be reasonably heat-proof for the radiator I guess.

Ricco_04

I guess most people use either ali or fiberglass :)

i was looking at the stock intercooler air feed the other day and no wonder we get such high temps, the opening is so small and restrictive.

i cut and chopped it around a bit and added some steel to the sides to blank it off and found that it would take a lot longer to get into the 30\'s when driving around town and when on the move at 60-70mph was getting as low as 26.

my air filter is sitting right above the rad and rad pipe so its bound to get alot of hot air as warthog proved by getting colder air so this is going to be my next move.

Just for comparison and peace of mind i fitted some hex risers to the hinges of the bonnet to act as bonnet raisers to see what the difference was.  Raise it by approx 30mm.

Took the car out yesterday afternoon/evening and can honestly say they do work... no matter what anyone says to you they do work.  The downforce of the front makes no difference to temps while moving so the raised bonnet doesn\'t cause any issues when moving and nor does it really help with cooling due to the low pressure created, however, when travelling at really low speeds or sat in traffic it really is quite amazing how long it now takes the temperature\'s to rise and doesn\'t suffer half the heat soak it used to, so am really pleased.

Basically i can\'t afford a vented bonnet as yet so this will be more than adequate until i can :D:D

Now that sounds like a most cunning and effective plan! Please elaborate on the hex risers...where from, how much etc.... ?!

Cheers Phil

I just used some of these mate :-

http://www.orbitalfasteners.co.uk/product_detail.php?id=2377

The just cut some M8 Bolt down to the right length to fit in and some lock washers and you\'re good to go, took me about 15 mins :)

The advantage i have is that i work for an air conditioning company so didn\'t need to buy any, we have these in stock :D
