Oxygen sensor?

I seem to have broken a small wire from what looks like the oxygen sensor on the exhaust as it has gone very brittle. Is it possible for this not to be connected and the car run fine, if perhaps a little rich!!
Any thoughts would be gratefully received am I damaging the motor etc.

i just soldered mine back together - and it seemed to work ok

i wouldn\'t worry about it too much in the short term. According to my MOT man I don\'t have one at all and my engine is running perfectly *touches wood*
