Bah my cars just gone in for its MOT , and failed on 4 things apparently!!!

drivers side head lamp to low
rear fog light not working (bs as i just fixed it the day before!!!) might be my handywork thats failed me :P
Exhaust to loud
and the DREADED EMMISSIONS test

apparently my car has no cat (woops forgot to check) do any of you guys know where i can get a decent high flow cat to install as ive been searching all mourning on the net and i can only seem to find places in america that will sell you a cat for a 1994 rx7 but you have to get it welded to ur exhaust and where i live theres not many places that will do that :(

i would then need a cat back exaust system to go with as the current one thats on is a straight thru to the downpipe system with no joints unless anyone else has a better idea that i can do.......

cheers fellas

what year is your car?

Kevin

RX7 upto July 1995 do not require a cat test and can opt for non cat test.

That MOT station sounds to pedantic to be honest, especially if there moaning about noise.  Find another would be my advice.

Where in the UK are you? I\'ve got a stock cat i don\'t really need and would be willing to let it go for not too much. I\'ve also got the frontpipe, so you could just replace the front and cat. It\'s been known for them to be fitted for the MOT, then \'fall off\' afterwards ;)

I thought it was up to \'91 for the precat test, my FC is a \'91 and I don\'t have to have a cat, you running an air pump? cause apparently if you have the right ECU settings and the airpump it can pass without a cat :) I also think that the max legal limit to an exhast is 90 decibels cause I looked it up a while ago, but can\'t find it again :( I think its up to the discression of the MOTer for that 1 at the test though. Perhaps check out here to make sure everything is checked off so they can\'t fail you again:

There\'s no legal limit for the MOT exhaust - it\'s at the MOT tester\'s discretion - that\'s verbatim what i was told by an MOT tester ;)
Technically, any exhaust louder than stock is illegal ;)

Any the cat thing is, i think, pre 95 for import cars :) But just because you don\'t have to have it, doesn\'t mean the cat won\'t help you ge tthrough emissions.
If you have a PFC you can tweak the map so it passes :)

Just found this online:
  •     First used before 1/8/1975 - Visual test only. Failure for excess idle speed,     dense blue or black smoke for 5 seconds at idle or during acceleration  up     to 2500rpm or half engine max speed whichever lowest.
  •     First used between 1/8/75 and 31/7/86 - meter test CO <=4.5%,     HC<=1200ppm.
  •     First used between 1/8/86 and 31/7/92 - meter test CO<=3.5%,     HC<=1200ppm.
  •
First used between 1/8/92 and 31/7/94 - advanced emission     test (CAT) if its running on petrol when presented, to the vehicle specific     limits usually around CO<=0.3%, HC<=200ppm and Lambda 0.97 - 1.03.      Remember from 1st August 2001 a basic     emission test will be carried out initially.
So therefore a 1995 car will be using the normal modern emissions test and not a more leniant precat test.

lol it looks like if the car was pre 1975 the MOT tester will just go: yea the car is there *ticks box* lol :D

i know my garage pretty well and they do it every year as i have a private plate i then inform them that as long as its not killing anyone it should pass, dont you just love old skool (although im sure it is killing lots!)

its a rotary lol it runs rich on idle and uses lots of fuel and makes lots of CO2, it should have more than 1 cat...oh wait it does....hmm 2 of my precats don\'t seem to be there anymore :D lol

IT\'s different for imports dude :) for 1995 and older then it\'s the slightly older pre-cat test.

But yeah, the pre 1975 one is ace!

It\'s upto 96 for an import car - no cat required, but it will need to pass the 3.5% CO test.

Exhaust noise:

b. assess subjectively the effectiveness of the silencer in reducing exhaust noise to a level considered to be average for the vehicleb. a silencer in such a condition, or of  such a type, that the noise emitted from the vehicle is clearly unreasonably above the level expected from a similar vehicle with a silencer in average condition

I stand corrected :) im sure u are lucky imports are up to 96 lol did your garage use the right set of tables? incase they made the same mistake as me and run the MOT on the newer regs?

Just got the test results today on paper from what the guys failed the emmissions test he said it was meant to be in the 3.5 range at 1200 or somthing basically the only bit it failed on was idle speed producing 4.7 co2 :p eeek

anway :-

ashrx the car is 1994 L reg import :)

SiH i live way out west in workington, cumbria :)

mitch erm good question i think they have but may phone and ask that :)

rest - thanks for the info guys its cleared alot of things up in my head of what it definatly needed to be the only thing i have to do know is get the emissions at idle from 4.7 to erm 3.5 or under haha how do we do that legaly ? wink wink :driving

edit ohh ps i think i can also add a exhaust bung to make it quieter but i cant seem to find where to buy one cheap if anyone has one going letme know :)
