Louder whoosh on first tubby?

Hi,

Been out in the FD a lot lately, and not its summer I can have the windows open properly....  trouble is, this starts the RX7 sport of listening to the odd noises that come from under the bonnet and getting paranoid...

I\'ve noticed in the last day ro so, that the whoosh of the intake (or the sound of the boost generally) is much louder when spooling from the first turbo than it used to be...  could this be a leak somewhere?  some air escaping noisily?

boost seems fine really...  still on stock twins running max of 0.95bar, got FMIC and the blue eblow joints look a little tatty - could it be these leaking?

Could it be noise from the HKS mushroom filters?

Just want to look at some preventive measures before anything goes wrong!

If your getting an air leak you\'d notice it on both tubby\'s. I\'ve had 2 leaks in the past and you know that air is leaking, the sound and loss of boost means there is no mistaking it. Have you changed air filter recently?
:Laugh LOL

If your holding solid boost i cant see it being a boost leak. Check all your couplers though.

RedRummy

well, it still boosts well, but its slow to reach max boost, if you know what I mean... It doesn\'t flick straight to max boost, it takes quite a bit of welly to get it there.

It just sounds different...  and I\'m just not sure which tubes to check LOL.

I have some Apexi air filter hanging around... maybe i\'ll put them on.... not too keen on the green HKS mushroom jobbies - they\'re covered in crap anyway.

Right, I had a better listen to the noise just now...

There is definitely a loud hissing noise that shouldn\'t be there... normally you can just hear the turbo spin up, then when you lift off you can hear the dump valve... but now, as the pressure builds I can hear this loud hissing noise... all through the first turbo range...

Boost only reaches maximum (0.95bar) when at hairly high revs.... On WOT it should reach max boost much earlier than that right?

I\'ve had a fiddle aorund, but not sure which pipes to look at...  even if I could identify allthe boost pipes, how do you know if one of them is leaking???

check the pipes on the intercooler, the coupler from the y-pipe is usually the bugger!
:Laugh LOL

And the coupler on the Y-pipe is often the cause too. Squish the pipes about a bit - sometimes splits aren\'t obvious without any pressure going through the pipes.

not sure where this is...  *embarrassed*

can you point it out here

the y-pipe sits about the turbos, infact it is where the airflow of the 2 turbos joins. The y-pipe is easily found if you remove the strut bar, then on the drivers side follow the intercooler pipes back towards the turbos, where the is a 90 degree bend down, just under where the strut bar sits will be the y-pipe. Infact here is a good link: clicky. Remove the coupler and have a good look at it, if you see any small cracks/splits or even any suspicious lines i\'d replace it.

OK great!  Thanks   :god

I\'ll have a poke around tomorrow...  that link looks good too.. the symptom they mention sounds just like what I\'m getting!

The coupler sits between the Y-pipe and the cross over pipe right?  bit like the plastic bits between different intercooler pipe sections?

yep that\'s the fella, if you\'ve got the standard one it will be black. I\'d recommend replacing it for an aftermarket one, as these parts are comming up to 15 yrs old now!

Looks like I\'ve got the standard one - it\'s black...  think i will replace it, htere was a bit of a gap round it, couldn\'t see any obvious cracks, but couldn\'t see it very well... but it did have some damp oil round the top seal with the crosspipe... I tightened the jubilee clip a bit and went for a drive and its still just as loud.

Didn\'t want to take it all apart there and then cos I need to get a replacement in first.. and gonna replace the other intercooler couplings too...

Any ideas wher I can get the required bits from (the Y pipe coupling and some new intercooler ones too)??
