new to it so please forgive me if you think i\'m asking about something obvious.

basically i need these things replaced:

-radiator
-intercooler
-crankshaft pulleys
-auxillary belt (there is something about it tho, i want to remove aircon unit, and when i do that i will need a shorter belt- so where can i get it from?)
-rear gearbox seal
- my exhaust is leaking between down pipe and centre section - need to replace the seal
-spark plugs(i think i can do this one )
-nearside front absorber
- power steering liquid is leaking from pump area- i think i need to replace whole pump
-rev counter is sticking so i think it needs to be replaced

what i need to know is what from this list i can do by myself, how to do it and what do i need to get it done(for example radiator - do i have to get it from underneath? does it mean i need an Air Jack Lift?).If there is something i can\'t do it myself could you please explain why(if i need some special tools or something)

if you want to know if im mechanically inclined ill say - if you tell me how to - i\'ll do it

could someone please spare some time and answer at least few questions?

thank you

im not a FD man - but ...

Rad - should be pretty easy - took me 2 days to do the FC - but i spend a day cleaning what i could see when i took it out

IC - cant see that being a big job - i reckon 1hr tops

gearbox seal - errrrr sounds a BIG job !

exhaust - pretty easy - get it up on ramps and remove and fix :D

plugs - if you have small hands its suppose to be ok - people say get them from underneath - so whilst its jacked up for the exhaust - nows your chance

thats a start for you :D

best idea its to jump in head first - then ask the questions as you go along - is the whole  fun of ownership with a rx7 - getting yours hands dirty !

Hi mate,

to do rad you need to take out, intake(s), intercooler, battery, fans etc and swap over but very straight forward and easy so i wouldnt worry at all.

Intercooler is on top and can be done in 10 mins flat if needed.

pulleys are best done when doing rad and front area empty.

gearbox is a long job and best done at a garage to be honest. be sure of what seal also as its much more likely to be the rear main seal.

exhaust seal should be as easy as, undoing 2 bolts pulling apart and replacing the gasket or just taking the middle section off - should be very easy but quicker if the car is on a ramp.

plugs can be tricky as there are things in the way but with a small rachet you could do them all from above and quite quick but first time i did mine it took an hour its now more 20 mins or so.

rev counter is more annoying than anything as the plastics in the fd are made from the cheapest plastics in the world.

shock absorber is systematic but needs to be done carefully. - maybe a good time to buy uprated suspension as others may follow suit and fail.

to answer a bit better;

-radiator - do yourself
-intercooler - do
-crankshaft pulleys - do
-auxillary belt (there is something about it tho, i want to remove aircon unit, and when i do that i will need a shorter belt- so where can i get it from?) - do
-rear gearbox seal - garage & lift
- my exhaust is leaking between down pipe and centre section - need to replace the seal - garage is quick but can be done on stands etc
-spark plugs(i think i can do this one ) - do
-nearside front absorber - garage will be quicker
- power steering liquid is leaking from pump area- i think i need to replace whole pump - garage would be best
-rev counter is sticking so i think it needs to be replaced - do yourself but try to have someone there thats done it before.

Timmy

there are a few things you could easily do yourself but seen as there\'s quite abit to do i would book it in to your local specialist. And i would change the clutch while the gearbox is off,

sickboy2345

thank you for all the replies

could you please tell me something, basically when i change the auxillary belt(lets say ill stay with aircon unit for a while) what do i need to do? (and same with pulleys) do i need to make sure they in some sort of order? have they got any marks on them so i have to mount them back as it was before? and how do i take the belt off? by taking one of them pulleys off?

thank you

interloper393

i dont think theres any markings or set way to put the pulleys back on as theres no timing on a rotary, just do 1 at a time but be warned you`ll need an impact wrench to get the studs off.. the belt i got from halfrauds, cost £8 :)

One thing about the IC that I think the others forgot to mention. If you go Front Mount, certain brands will require you to cut away sections of your bumper for proper routing of the pipes/fitment. I\'d stick with an uprated SMIC if I were you though, they are easy (enough) to install and plenty of cooling for the stock twins (with good ducting).

sickboy2345

thx guys!

and what about a radiator? anything i need to know?

interloper393

yip make sure you remove all the air and bleed the system right, else you`l get air locks, overhead the engine and bugger yer seals :D

sickboy2345

how do i do that? could someone please explain it to my step by step? please....
i have never done it before, just don\'t wan to do nothing wrong...:(

basically on saturday ill have some time so what i wanted to do is:

-replace radiator(got a new, aluminium one)
-replace bottom crankshaft pulley(my one is dented and its damaging the auxilary belt)
-replace other pulleys(got a nice set - aluminium ones)
-replace drive belt
-replace rear brake pads
-replace nearside front shock absorber

ill probably try to replace the hose for power steering pump, maybe that will prevent it from leaking, if not ill try to get this power steering pump and replace it, and also i will check the leak on exhaust(i have got a leak between down pipe and a centre section)

could someone please spare some time and tell me how to do it? like step by step? little how to kinda thing...i don\'t want to break my car :(

I have an uprated Trust SMIC for sale, very easy to swap with the standard intercooler and offers MUCH more cooling and more flow :god

Yup! I\'ve got one in mine as well. Proper ducting is ESSENTIAL!! The stock duct is rubbish, and no duct is just silly (unless you like that "fresh from the radiator" cooling factor..).

I\'m planning on fabbing up a working duct out of aluminum for the Trust/GReddy uprated SMIC. We\'ll see how well she works ^_^
