What size tyres for trackday wheels?

I managed to get my hands on some lovely 17" (8 and 8.5") for use on the track. Was thinking of getting Toyo R888\'s for them.

I\'ve read about a couple of people suffering from low grip at the front so I don\'t want to do the standard 225 front 235 rear without checking first.

So what size tyres would you guys recommend for the track given these wheel widths?

Just in case it helps I\'ve never driven a performance car on a track before but I really want to become the best driver I can and will be attending at least one academy day before I fly solo.

I\'ve recently done my first track day and used nexan on the rear and bridgestones on the front considering the rear tyres are budgets they did not let go once(i was starting to push the car after a few sessions too)day was dry with drissel coming in at the end,i use same size tyres as on my road rx7,

a note though-although the nexan and bridgestones tyres gripped well in the dry they were slipping around everywhere in the wet and took me off flower picking infield very quickly.

For your first trackday, I\'d probably be getting something cheaper and better in the wet than Toyo R888.  You want to be concentrating on your lines, being smooth etc not maximum grip.

That said, I think 225s or 235s would be fine on the front.  If anything its probably better to have your car prone to understeer rather than oversteer if your not used to catching it :Thumbs-up

Have fun on track :3gears-lh

Couldnt agree more with ^^^^^^

There seems to be a need to go as fast as is humanly possible on your trackday right from the word GO!

Most companie put down cones for braking, turning and apex, sometimes exit, so build up your ability by going dot to dot....then start to increase your pace once you know where the car needs to go.

235\'s on the front and 245\'s on the rear.

Have fun!!!

I spose I should have said. I\'m not interested in being a **** and crashing through the gears and getting the car off balance. When I said I want to be the best driver I can be I meant driving smoothly and learning to see the lines.

However I\'m glad you\'ve recommended against the 888\'s they are soooo expensive!

Interesting you should recommend 245\'s on the rear. Aren\'t the standard 17" wheels running 255s?

Papercup

i run 235 front, 255 rear....which seems to be standard size on my car as there is one of those jap stickers inside the door with it on

yes, 888s are big money....but they are a step ahead of road tyres. I get very frustrated with road tyres on track, very understeery and annoying. I\'d start as you mean to go on and get some; it doesn\'t mean you\'ll go mental or anything. It just means as you get more confident and push harder thru the day you won\'t be held back.

If you are taking the wheels with you and changing them at the track they\'ll last several track days.

I won\'t take them with me because that will be awkward but I\'m thinking of changing them the day before, driving to the track with them, do the track day and driving back but then taking them off.

So yeah I would hope to get a bit of life out of them at more than £700 a set they\'ll need to last a bit.

yeah i used to do that...gets expensive....i swear the bloody things wear at the same rate driving sedately to the track as they do when i get there...

also you won\'t be able to use them fully; they come with less tread than a road tyre anyway...hence why i now have three pairs sitting in the shed that aren\'t road legal but have at least another track day or even two on them....

i bought a spare set of wheels....you have that already....if you have a way of taking a set with you then use it...otherwise you\'ll end up with a big collection of part-worns like me

You\'d better not or i\'ll give you a slap:spank :eek::eek:
your a pervert for even suggesting that, how could you ruin a beautiful car like ours by adding a tow hook! :Grrr LOL
:Laugh LOL

It\'s not my fault that there isn\'t room enough for a bloody wallet in the car let alone trying to pack 4 wheels and tyres :) but I assure you I was joking!

I\'m looking at the Kuhmo KU15\'s or V70a as next set of rears. Have the KU15\'s on the front and seem very nice tyres.

Shaun good info, have you used the KU15s on the track yet? If so did you experience any of the understeer I\'ve heard other people complain of? What size are they?

Sorry for the barrage of the questions but I don\'t want the car to be a limitation. It would be criminal to have something as capable as the FD and then to handicap it with shoddy rubber.

...then you are wasting your time with road rubber....sorry to say it. I have been there. 888s and such are the next level.

The practicalities do get in the way, i know :(

The kuhmos are the stickiest tyres I\'ve every bought and I\'ve not had 888\'s. I do get a bit of understeer out of them but I think its more to do with the uprated anti roll bars and needing some tweeks on the alignment.

I\'m still due to swap the rears over to Ku15\'s too. Have to say them seem a good tyre in the wet. The 888\'s are a pure dry weather tyre. Always think what happens if you go somewhere and it starts to rain heavy ?
