I\'ll be quick with this one as im sure it\'s fine.

A little pop, bang (Back fire) normal with thr RX7? Its got a wide bore back box on it made by WGT.

Another question, with the addition of the back box, will this of added a couple of bhp? or just freed it up a little at the top end, speed wise?

Cheers
Steve

Steve,

Does it do it all the time?

If it was a non-turbo rotary, then I wouldn\'t worry about it at all - we use to love making them backfire deliberately by reving them up in a particular gear whilst driving along (e.g. 2nd, or 3rd.) then just backing off the accelerator.  Extra fuel would be sucked through the carby from the engine and ignite in the hot exhaust!  great fun :)

For a turbo rotary to back fire is not that normal, but if you have an aftermarket exhaust system then it is possible.

I believe low compression can also make it occur more, but it could also be something like an injector leaking etc..

Steve - if you have changed the exhaust you MUST ensure that you aren\'t getting boost spike or boost creep.  Changing the exhaust can do this, but ultimately cause engine failure from leaning out and detonation.

On a turbo rotary I do not recommend changing the exhaust in any way unless you are sure it is not running lean i.e. by checking it with a proper lambda meter etc.
Thanks,

It does not happen all the time but yes, must of the time. I though changing the back box only was fine, and fulling was not an issue with this one mod?
The car just recived a rebuild from RX Moors and a service.
The exhaust was built for WGT and supplied for them, when the previous owner bought it he was told that there would be no issue with fulling (I have no proof Pip said this, this is just something the owner said). I had spoken to WGT previously about the exhaust but the only records they had were that they sold it and the got a company to manufacture it for them.
Not sure what the best action would be next?

Hi Steve i\'m sure your car is fine different exhaust systems have slight different affects on the fd, Mine pops quite a bit especially when weather is more cool. I don\'t really know of an fd with exhasut mod that doesn\'t pop. I have ablitz catback and blitz induction kit on mine. Yep back box in good nick will add a little extra power, though how much power you  get extra and where you feel the power in the rev range varies from vendor to vendor.

I can only comment on what my 3rd gen does, and thats pop and bang all the time.

I have a racing beat cat back, and metalit cat, and mine seems to pop and bang whenever im pushing on.

Saying that, its not been starting too well lately, so backfiring may well be an indication of poor compression.

davefrith

mine pops and bangs etc and flames fairly often as well when hot  which is always fun

3inch downpipe, no cat, apexi back box,

most FD\';s do this, I would not worry about it, popping anfd banging seems to be a sign of a very hot engine though so make sure you let it cool off etc
