hi, my first thread on the site so please correct me if im wrong.

since ive passed my license ive always dreamed of having an rx-7, however, the dream became a bit vivid when i saw how much the insurance is even for a fairly standard car. ill have been driving a year in august and will hopefully still have no claims or points.

ive been getting quotes from various insurance companies and they are all prety dam steep, also having trouble with them identifing it as a 1.3 which im sure youve all had aswell. I was wondering if i could get insured on the cheapest car insurable fully comp with the option of beeing able to drive any other car and having my old man as the owner of the rx-7 and me driving it?

is this possbile? if not are there any other ways of a \'legal scam\' to get around hefty insurance, cheers will

I would say that you will seriously struggle. You could get insurance but it will cost an absolute fortune. Heard of quotes of over 3k for small miles per year.

Its not really worth it at your age. You need a few more years under your belt before you should consider one. I got one when I was 25 and had built up towards it going from AXGT to a FTO GPX then to the FD.

If you really want one and love a rotary go out and buy a 1st gen or FC EGI. I own a 1st gen as a daily. It doesn\'t have the grunt of the FD but is every bit as much fun. Plus there are plenty of mods available and they will take majority of 13b (or even 20b) engines with some work making them seriously quick motors !

Its worth ringing round but you will find very few people willing to insure you.

1.3 or 2.6 it is still group 20 insurance. If your dad insures it and you drive thats insurance fronting and could result in a refusal to pay out in the event of an acident. It leaves you with 2 options pay out for the insurance or keep it off the road for a few years.

Most insurances won\'t actually have you on as a second driver anyway.

cheers for the help guys, much apreciated .

you were saying you have owned a mitsubishi fto, i respect that this is an rx-7 club but does anyone know what insurance group they are or have any experience insuring them? i think a rex might have to waite

cheers, will

They will be about group 16, a friend of mine has one. Still will be pricey to insure for a 18 year old but a hell of alot cheapder than an fd. If only they were rear wheel drive.

Brett

For some reason FTO\'s are quite an expensive insurance proposition - a friend was paying well over a grand to insure his and I think he was 26 with 8 years ncb and an accountant!  I\'d look at something like a Mk1 MR2 or similar, its RWD, handles nicely and if you look after it will appreciate by the time you come to upgrade to a 7. :wave

I think the GR is group 16 and the GPX is 18. I reduced my tax by going for a daily driver and a FD. Was paying 420 a year on classic insurance on the FD when I first bought it bone stock. Pay a bit more now the mods ar in place :D

The 1st gen cost me the slightly less to insure than a diesel pug 106 ! But they would only insure it in an un-modded state.

I worked up to my fd
froma civic coupe Cost 1600 as a named driver at 17
then a celica GT which cost about 800 at 20 with 0ncb
now at 22 got an fd with 1 years ncb (no accedents just or points in last 5 years though) and it costs me 1600 with 1000 excess. plus im doing 13.38 mpg at a cost of 114.9p v-power. filled it this morning at the cost of 67pounds.
so insurance is the cheap part its the running cost you have to think about for the year!

also going to need to get the gearbox sorted as its making a noise on 2nd and 4th now. plus a shock sounds dry, and then i need 2 rear tyres that are 18s so not cheap.

so just go in with eyes open at 18 mate. because it seems to many people just buy them then cant afford them and sell after 6months or less.

Hi trail hound, I know the feeling mate its awful. I been wanting a rex for as long as i can remeber. Im 18 now and theres just no way i would be able to afford the insurance. Saw a mint black rex yday and i was unbelivibly jealous, Im saving up for a 200sx so i can run that for a year or 2 to get used to rwd cars.. i had a quote of about 1650 tpft on a 200sx.

im 19 and have a years no claims and a years named driver discount (which wasn\'t used) and 3 points. Insurance on a modded FCegi is 2k without mods it would have been 1.3 k. When speaking to performance direct they told me that my insurance would have been a lot less if i had had experience on a rwd modded car. so next year should be alot cheaper :D
