Hi got into the car on Saturday and went to turn the ignition and there was nothing, thought the battery had run flat again so (even though I had stuck in a trickle charger).

So took the battery out and went to charge it on Sunday night but when I connected the battery to the charger it was fully charged???????

So put the battery back into the car and still nothing looked at the main fuses and they seemed OK any suggestions.

bad earth electricity wont flow unless theres a curcit ie a loop what goes out must come back to battery

do you have an immobiliser???? if so start there if not see below

if you are sure the fuses are fine the most obvious place to start is at the igntion switch. get a tester and check that the switch is getting a live feed if it is test the other side of the switch if there is no power there when turned on replace the switch. if there is no power to the switch you are loosing the live before and you will have to work backwards from that point.

if you have power on both sides of the switch someone else with a wiring dia maybe ably to help as this is really a generic answer for you.

thanks for the responses guys yes there is an imobilisor its a viper VX460, I\'ll ask the auto spark that fitted it to have a look at it for me, failing that what eath should I check, I have taken the battery out a few times over the past few months is there one about there?

karl_tate

check the earth wires that actually go onto the battery.

my negative of the battery was not getting a good connection and everything was going crazy lol

have you checked the main fuse under the bonnet?

batman

if your near wilts mate i can check the immobiliser for you

if you want to check the earth for your battery all you do is set your tester to circuit test for continuity put one probe on the negative of the battery with it connected then put the other probe anywhere on the metalwork of the car or the engine. if the tester reads circuit then your earth is fine.

def start with the immobiliser as that cuts all power.

Try your lights first. If they work it\'s more likely to be an immobiliser issue. If they dont, you have a bad earth or open circuit. First place to check for that is near the battery.

Something like this happened to me a couple of weeks ago. Went to start the car and there was no power at all. Even the immobiliser light was off. Checked the battery and that was fine. However it all boiled down to a dodgy conection on the negative terminal. Check that in case the silver clip is loose where it connects to the battery(near the fuse box) and see if that helps. Im no electrician but it helped me. Good luck.

What Robbie said. The lights will still work with the immobilisor, so as he said if they work then it\'s the immonbilisor, otherwise it\'s an earth.

I\'ll bet it\'s the earth though. I too had a dodgy connection on the earth on my battery when i first had it. It would just not do up tight.

yup. mine would not tighten any more, put a cut down screw down the side which actually screwed in and got tigher :Laugh  until i could get home

Thanks, the car is working, I fully charged the battery, up to 14 volts, changed the main fuse, and took the front bumber off and checked the earth and the negative battery lead as suggested, however there is a drain on the car loosing around 1volt a day and when the battery reaches 11 volts the car won\'t start.

Think the alternator is OK when I check the voltage when the car is running it reads 13 1/2 14 volts.  I\'m pretty sure the problem is with the imobiliser as the problem started shortly after it was fitted although one of my lights stopped working when the imobilisor was installed.  I\'ve replaced my lights so that should tell me if the problem was with the lights or imobilisor will update you in a couple of days.

Thanks for all the help so far.

if its loosing 1volt a day then there is something that is still turned on when there is no keys in the ignition/alarmed

Probably want to have a word with whoever fitted your immobilser and tell them to come back and do it properly, by the sound of it! Definitely sounds like something\'s still drawing power when it should all be switched off. It doesn\'t have one of those remote start attatchments does it?
