Hi guy\'s im sure you get these questions loads but i tried a search but couldnt find anything usefull

basicly i have got an rx7 fd that is compltly stock but i want to start tuning it. im used to tuning std engine\'s but when it comes to the rotary i dont know where to start. my aim is about 300bhp but i dont know what i would need to do to get it up to that. what route\'s to ppl go and what\'s the 1st mod you would recomend?

cheers
Josh

Timmy

De-cat exhaust, fuel pump and frp and a remap should see you 300bhp.

Jeffers_21

whats would be the best way of remaping? buying a standalone or what? would it be worth going straight for a power fc or are there any other good ecu\'s to go for?

also what exhaust are good for the rx? would it be the usual\'s like blitz and hks or are there some other makes i should look at?

like i said i dont really know much about what parts are good and not. i had a starlet gt turbo before hand and everyone went for the usual jdm brands ect

Timmy

most people just get the power fc most rx tuners prefer them. but you could go for a hks fcon gold or a motech but they will cost alot more. The normal suspects for the exhaust as you said, i think most people look for what sound they want as alot of the exhaust are very loud.

Jeffers_21

can you recomend a good place to get parts for them?

Philo

I was wondering the same thing.

From what I understand, just about any mods to increase the performance on my RX would require a remap. Which isn’t something i want to pay for too often.

So what would be a good stage 1 upgrade?
Relatively low risk, low cost modifications that make sense to be done at the same time can be done together.

After a bit of goggleing all I could find was this site:
http://www.rx7store.net/product_p/stage%201%20power%20upgrade.htm

I’m imagining:
  • Improve air flow…
  • non-sequential turbo conversion
  • Apex Power FC + Commander

Philo

Forgot to ask the main question. How much will it cost to get to about 300bhp?

Jeffers_21

yeh that would be nice to know lol :)

Lum

When i got my RX it was standard and i went for the following
Twin blitz filters - £100 on ebay
Blitz CAT back - £about £300
i ran with these on a standard ecu which seemed fine.
I then bought a power FC (approx £450), this is pretty much the only option on a RX as the standard ECU cannot be re-mapped and the only other options are alot more expensive and harder to find someone to map them.
I ran on the base map for a while before buying a decent De-CAT pipe (£100), i didn\'t fit this till i was booked in for a Re-Map (£300-£400) as you will have to have one if your removing the CAT, other wise your risking your engine.
This is a great start for mods and you\'ll defo notice the differance, should also get you somewhere round 300BHP. If your feeling flush you May also want to consider an uprated fuel pump (£100) & replacement intercooler (£100 - £500)before you go for a re-map.
Hope this helps

Jeffers_21

cheer\'s thats some good advice. if you decat it straight away dose it have problems if you dont remap at the same time?

Lum

Yes it will over boost and the ecu will not be able to supply enough fuel, which will lead to a blown motor in no time at all. These cars only need to run lean once and it\'s bye bye Apex seals & hello big bill!

Jeffers_21

cheers for that. very good info :D

Martiny

non-sequential will NOT increase the power.

SiH

I am in almost exactly the same situation.
My car came with (power wise):
A cat back, and, err, that\'s it!

I\'ve bought:
Apexi filter Kit (as I really rate Apexi\'s stuff, adn there\'s some very interesting reading out there about their flow and fitlration versus a lot of other big brands) From Nengun
Power FC From Nengun
Tiger Decat Silencer secondhand
HKS Front Pipe from eBay
For the moment, an XS power IC, as it was cheap, and with the right ducting, will be better than stock.
I\'ve also just acquired a large intercooler which i plan to V-mount, but i\'m not going to have time to do this before the remap and subsequent track day i have booked!

That\'s power wise.
In addition, I\'ve also invested in the Greddy underdrive pulley kit and a set of super now blanking plates to do a proper job of removing the air pump, and a Koyo Rad from eBay in the states. I\'m also going to fab up some ducting with a mate this weekend.

For reliability, I\'ve checked the rat\'s nest and replaced any dodgy looking hoses, and removed the valve thingy that i\'ve forgotton the name of that feeds the air pump! I\'ve also got a new fuel filter, am going to do a full fluids change, try to rewire the fuel pump if i have time, and i think that\'s it!

Hopefully, with a conservative map from Pip, that should see me just shy of a reasonably reliable 300ish, which will do me for a good while. After that, the next stage will be to relocate the battery, sort the v-mount, and then a new fuel pump and injectors. That should see me at a point where I feel I have got a good power level from the twins without spending extreme money :)

Hopefully i\'ve gone about things the right way!!
