Hi All
Total newbie to the forum, so hello to all!
I am going to be in the market for a Gen 3 RX7, admired them for absolutely ages, looks wise they cannot be touched . Basically I need some help/advice/guidance on a few areas and I believe this is the best place to ask, so here goes:
Rotary Engine:
I am a total beginner when it comes to discussing the rotary engine, but am aware that these can be expensive to fix when they need a rebuild.
  • How can you tell if an engine rebuild is required? When approaching 60k miles?
  • Whats tips to prolong engine life? i.e. I have heard that it’s best to let it run for 3 mins before turning off engine.
  • Where is the best place to service? How much should i expect to pay?
  • How much should i expect to pay for a full tank? Road Tax?
  • What should I look out for when actually going out to buy one?
  • Any other common problems i should look out for?
Pricing:
· Should I set a limit with regard to pricing dependant on the year of the car?
Insurance:
The big put off for most! I have read on the forums that certain companies can be deemed reasonable. I am 25, 3 years NCB, driving for 7 years – no claims to date. Car will only be used weekends, maybe the odd weekday evening. Not full time as I tube it to work. I live in west . who is the best for insurance?
As you can see I am not pretending to know a lot about this car, but really want one!
Thanks all:WaveBye

Why its good to do your homework of "specialists"

1. engine rebuild is usally required around about the 60k mark although ive known them go on alot longer, one thing you can do is get a compression test to see if any of the chambers are gettin low on compresion which can be one of the things that can cause your engine to blow.  Its probably best to take it to a rotary specialist for this.  There are quite a few to choose from, most of them are on here.

2. take care of it, dont abuse it, yes you can drive it fast but dont rag the balls out of it all the time, this is common sense for any car.  Service it when it needs it.  The reason they say leave the engine running before turning of is because the turbos tend to get hot especially if you have been driving it hard and using the turbos, the time you leave it after stopping before turning of engine gives the turbos time to cool down as it can damage them if you turn the engine of before they have cooled down.  A turbo timer is very useful as this will do it for you, you can take the key out and lock the door and the engine wil keep running for a set time, they cost about 50 quid.

3. Alot of people on here service there rx\'s themselves as you need to change the oil every 3000 miles.  For a full service with all the extra bits its probably best to take it to a garage, if they dont have a clue at your local take it to a rotary specialist.
4. To fill up costs around 60 quid i think with the current fuel prices, mpg is usually around 20 on standard and lower depending on mods. Road tax is 110 quid a year as its a 1300cc engine :D

5 & 6 There are alot of things to look out for and its best to know a bit about the car before you buy one, the "search button" at the top is very useful as there is alot of informtion on this website, the technical section will have most of the stuff you are after.  Other people in the past have asked the same questions as you and the answers will be on here somewhere

Its best to find out which rotary specialist is near you and maybe give them a call and have a chat.

Hope some of that helps :WaveBye

Turbo timers are really out dated, with modern oil it won\'t really help. By far a better thing to do is drive off boost for the first and last 5 minuets of any journey to get your tempretures rise. Once you stop it will start to build up heat once again.
