We\'re planning on getting the engine rebuilt sometime within the next 5 months or so, and having not had to go through this before, thought I\'d better get some advice!!

The engine hasn\'t gone bang yet at around 64kmiles, but as we don\'t know if it had rebuild before it was imported, thought it best to get it done!

Basically would just like to know the best mods to get good BHP but try to keep it as reliable as possible. What do you think?

best getting it comp tested first , u never know she might have high readings n save u 4k lol...

but if u go for a rebuild, depends really where u wanna go with it, if keeping it standard, then just a basic rebuild... but u may as well have some porting done whilst yer there :yes..

Yeah we will be having a compression test, but what sort of extra money are we talking for street porting etc..

interloper393

think its a few hundred more for the porting... but ud need an apexi ecu and a remap to go with it,  bigger injectors, fuel pump 2 and a fpr

get it ported and get a apexi power fc and get it mapped, you can have it mapped for the type of driving you wll use it for.  also downpipe and exhaust system are a good thing to upgrade.

got mine in 04 from japan and its still ok save your money and wait till it goes bang, thats my way off thinking

When the power goes up, so does the fuel consumption. The reliability comes down so you need to find a balance between reliability and power. There is no point getting it ported unless you plan on big power and really crap fuel consumption. Stock ports can cope with 400bhp no probs. If it\'s standard or mildly modded, more than likely the water seals will let go soon or maybe not. It\'s a tough call but personally i would wait for the water seals to go, and get the parts as cheap as poss. Save the money it would cost to get it ported and get a pfc instead, best mod ever for an fd!

Carl

A ported engine does not necessarily mean poorer fuel consumption.
Often a single turbo car with a ported engine is actually better for fuel consumption because the car is off boost for more of the time.
Most of the fuel consumption depends on your right foot.
I am not saying that these cars can ever be economical, but driving style does have an influence.
As for engine rebuild,if you do it before it goes then it may save further damage to such things as the turbo\'s.
So a ported engine with an aftermarket ECU such as the Apexi and mapping on the stock fuel system can net around 50 or more HP over stock whilst still retaining reliabilty.More HP can be gained by changing exhaust and induction.

porting is not only for big power, you can get a mild port just to gain that extra bit of power and also helps reduce lag, I have a big street port on my FD and driveability is no different and fuel consumption is no different, all depends how i drive it.  The Apexi Power FC is def a must as it can help with fuel economy and also map the car for the mods you have making more power :Thumbsup!

Thanks guys!

I\'m not too keen on the idea of waiting for something to go before the rebuild, I think it will be compression test then go from there.

Going to have a scout round for ECU - something I\'ve been looking at anyway.

Sometimes if you wait for it to go before you rebuild it can cause more damage meaning more cost when you get the rebuild.

Apexi Power FC is your best bet with ecu, 90% of us use them, all the tuners know how to map them and they are pretty cheap compared to others.  Also you can get a hand held controller called the commander which lets you keep an eye on all the engine parameters such as water temp, air temp, boost, knock, etc. very very useful.

This is where i got mine from:

//www.nengun.com

cheapest i could find at the time

Just seen another thread saying that Nengun are out of stock and with Apexi being bought out, it isn\'t clear when more stock will be forthcoming - might be worth buying one from somewhere that has existing stock, even if it costs a little more.

spoke to WGT half hour ago, he still has them in stock but with having a problem with to pfc\'s iv had reliability issues with them so looking at alternatives.
