forgot to mention there is quite a strong smell of petrol when cold aswell, all problems seem to go though once car warms up

Mine idles at about 1500 when cold and drops to about 700ish when warm. Maybe your idle speed is abit low

LeedsLad

had the same problem mate ive been told to try new leads and plugs

nikp

Also, you cold idle screw could be incorrectly adjusted, and it\'s worth checking your clutch button opration. However, neither of these would explain why you\'re getting a smell of petrol

gonna book it inn for oil change new plugs and leads and flush the coolant as its been sat for so long maybe this will cure alot as it sounds quite rough when cold

If I remember there is a clutch switch, this may be faulty, when you put foot down on clutch to engage gear, it usually makes it rev a little higher, maybe check this first, oil wont go off if sitting for a while, not will leads or plugs. They will only need changing if old. Perhaps let her idle and warm up, and find a nice streatch of road to see if it settles once warm, or see how she runs once warm.

Ill second that.
We have about 20 MX5\'s a year with the same problem, its nearly always the clutch switch.
An MX5 one is the same as the FD, i used an MX5 one when i found mine was faulty with the same simptons you are describing.

well before i bought her i know she was sat round for about 12-14 months before being used again.going to do an oil and filter change,is it worth changing the plugs and leads anyway even though they were only done about 6000 miles ago?thought they may have weatherd a bit when it was sat by the road so long.will check out the clutch switch too
