please does anybody know where i can get a half decent rebuild done or am i better of buyin a new one?

Have you asked Jimmys if they do reconditioned exchange units?

grinder

i know it sounds daft , but is something else causing the pump to break down , too tight belt , bad steering rack etc...

just a thought

That would be because the rack is still full of oil, and under pressure. Once the rack is drained, it is still a bit tough at low speeds, but has much better feedback with speed.

John

grinder

how do you drain the rack ??

more on that subject - how can you fill it up ?

the simple answer is usually the hardest  :)

with taking the air pump off you should put the dual pulleys on - so thats something to think about

although with my steering probs - i wonder if taking the PS off mine would help ( although its a big job if it doesnt !! )

Grinder, you first. Because we have the same car, i can tell you how to do it. Basicly, the rack is left in the car, the pump and bracket is removed along with the pipe work, You then need to rock the steering until all the fluid is out. Some will remain though, and this will provide the lubrication for the rack. You then need to get replacement bolts for where the pies origanaly joined the rack.

Rich, the procedure with yours will be pretty much the same, assuming you have an FD. The difference being in the pully system. All you really need is the alternator, water pump and crank pullies, you just need to find out what belt system you can use.

thanks john !! - sounds simple enough

so on the same point - if the fluid is low in the rack ( haynes says check this if the vehicle is bad on steering ) - how do you add fluid

the PS fluid works only in the pump ( so i assume ) so how do you add oil into the rack - or am i wrong and its the same oil ?

why oh why oh why cant it be something simple like bad tracking :( :(

It appears i put pies, rather than pipes. I wonder if thats a nice chicken pie... no that wouldn´t fit.
The fluid in the power steering resevoir gets pumped around the rack, so that is where it gets filled up.
I take that you have done all the usual checks for your shaking? At that speed, i can only assume that it has something to do with the wheels/suspension/balancing etc.
I hope it gets sorted.

i have had the wheels balanced and the tracking done and swapped the back wheels for the front ( before anything was done )

it shakes at high speed - and pulls to the left

so it proves that the fluid is in the rack - so thats something less to worry about

im still not convinced it been tracked correctly - they did it and said it was fine and didnt need adjusting - so not sure if they actually know what they are doing ????

i took the settings but they bloke didnt want them

its really annoying as the car is a pain to drive - put it this way its done 500miles in 7mths - its no fun taking it out :(

its gonna be an interesting drive to rotorstock i can tell you that !

( it pulls to the left - so i checked the passenger side front wheel - thats ok , disc isnt binding , so not sure now - will have to check the drivers side next - then after that - im lost )

When i first took mine for the tracking, the adjusted it using the 323 gtx settings. Nearly blew my top, but i suppose they were German:D  If you have the correct figures, i would suggest they stuff their pride and have it set as you ask them.

Does the whole car shake, or is it through the steering. What i am probing for, is could it be coming from the back?
Have you checked the wheel bearings? Suspension bushes and anti-roll bar mounts and bushes?

Oh well, i´ll give you a shout if i think of anything else.
