How are folks using their WI. The reason for the question is as follows: -

I was out for a mild blast and came upon an AC Cobra meet at the Grashopper Pub in Westeram. Stopped to look around and when I went to leave the car park the water temps had dropped to 77 but inlet had heat soaked to 65 :Grrr

I couldnt pull away too hard since I am not quite run-in yet but would WI be able to bring down the inlet so that when I getted mapped soon I can give it some welly whenever I want.

Keith with WI the heat soak etc would read as it was but as soon as you reached the WI switch on point where ever it was set you would of seen the temps drop rapidly especially if running a water/meths mix.

even with water injection, you will always get heat soak when its been parked.   water will just bring it down quicker once you start driving.

That\'s the way to do it! :Thumbsup!

Thanks for replies

I may need to read up on WI a bit then because I\'m not sure whether this is something that is automatic at a set point, or a button you hit when you need it.

I do not really want the map to be dependant on WI.

the basic kits comes with a boost pressure switch, usually adjustable,    set it to about 0.7 bar and it squirts when it reaches that boost.  Its a very simple and cheap system and is just a safety measure,  you car wont need to be mapped for it.

There are lots more complicated systems but if you just want some assistance with air temps then the above will do fine.

fogret water injetcion and focus on running the motor cooler to start with.

bad advice. the car will need to be mapped for it !!!!

Hi Keith,
The temp sensors are slow to react unless a really cool stream of air/stroke water goes over them.
With no water injection just cos the temp say\'s it is high,as soon as you open the throttle the air that is going into the engine will be much cooler than the reading you are getting cos the sensor is still measuring the temp of the metal it is located in in the plenum.
So don\'t worry, your engine will be fine for the situation you have referred to once it is fully mapped.

Hi,  Long time no speak

I agree that you need a well sorted cooling system.

The level of expertise you have a built around mapping your own car with water and methanol is certainly very good but dont forget there are a lot of us out there who #1 cant do our own mapping and #2, dont want to squeeze every single ounce of power out of the car.  #3, once it is mapped just want the car left alone.

From MY experience, a basic kit is cheap,  simple, and isnt relied upon.  I am pretty sure that my engines wouldnt have lasted as long as they did without the basic kits that i have fitted running nearly 500 hp for over 2 years on track and drifting.  It keeps the temps down on the track, strip or road.

You can map for the water but then you rely on it and need to put safety measures in place like clog sensors etc,  dont forget, mapping is expensive if you cant do it yourself.

I paid £100 for my kit\'s and never had a problem with it.  Well worth the money of you ask me.

My question is if you run out of water while using WI is there any danger ?

Also WI is awesome for the summer to keep the temps low, remember the purpleOne on getting on the m-way it was reading 46oC, a quick blast later with the setting at 0.7bar for the WI implementation the temp was 18oC :Party

Hi Carl

Yeah I tend to agree and since I have a CAI pulling air in direct from the front of the car I kinda thought things will be ok.

However with my v-mount it would be better if I fitted my vented summer bonnet.

Cars running well now and nearly up to 2000mls - see you soon.

if your not mapped for it you should be ok....i never map for water for this reason...most use it for safety first and foremost

What i am trying to get across is this.

water 972BTU
Pump fuel 169 BTU

that means that if you add 156cc of water it is the same as adding around 800cc of pump fuel. all you are doing is adding too much fuel into the combustion chamber. The only saftey you gain is from running rich and over cooling the engine. Power will nose dive. You may as well have the car mapped rich or turn te boost down to achieve the same net result.

If you run a good system when the water level drops it will return the boost pressure to wastegate spring pressure. The same if it encounters a problem.  Cheap kits will only lead to an expensive end !!

Scott,

Did you ever try running the injectors into the UIM (after the throttle plates)rather than the elbow or ic piping? I\'ve got my HFS-5 kit now so am just planning the install. The v-mount does a fine job of keeping the air temps down so I\'m using the water primarily as a knock surpressant. I\'m thinking of running 1 injector in each of the secondary runners to get as close to the combustion chamber as possible. Any thoughts?

thanks,

Steve

I did plan to do this but had some concerns with creating a good seal. also the nozzle spray pattern is 45 deg i think. in a small pipe it wont develope fully. other than that it will cure the IAT wash over problem for sure. try it. you can always blank it all off

i have some pics

Thanks Scott, think I\'ll get another UIM to experiment with. Good point re the spray not developing properly in a small pipe, hadn\'t thought of that.
