Are there are any diesel 13b out there?
Or is it possible to run on on diesel?

That\'s an interesting thought, actually - I\'m not sure if you could reliably attain the necessary compression ratio though as diesels are running on compressions of 20:1+ and they do need the compression ratio to allow for the fuel\'s self-ignition.

The standard compression ratio is very low, so unless you had some method of FI then I dont think its possible.

IIRC Rolls Royce experimented with a diesel rotary, a small rotary was acting as the engine with a larger rotary acting as a supercharger...I think. (Could be complete bull)

Also with the higher temps and stresses involved with a diesel the 13B would require some structural enhancements to cope.

No, you are right, I have read that in the History of The Rotary Engine book

I have seen picture on net about that, really cool engineering.

A friend has a cement business and one of the pumps has a rotary engine, which would be diesel, I\'ll ask him more.

diesel rotarys for cars arent practical, as you cant really attain enough compression constantly to ignite the fuel as diesels use compression based ignition rather than spark plugs...using forced induction to create that pressure doesnt work either as the egts are then probably too high and melt the bugger...

would be interesting to see if someone can do it though! if your in a "thinking outside the box" mood then take a look at the quasiturbine engine.

Mmmmm a diesel rotary! Speed and economy...bliss

RemarkLima

Surely they\'d just need strengthening and a smaller bathtub on each rotor face, meaning higher compression?

the problem is that the seals dont provide enough of a seal to get the required compresion ratio i think, but i could be wrong!

If the combustion face on the rotor was completely filled and smooth with no bath, then with the geometry of the current Mazda rotary engine you would still not have high enough compression for ignition to take place. It would be probably around 12 to 1 ratio.
Curtis Wright did alot of work on multifuel capable wankel design rotary engines that still had spark igntion, they were very good and were used in alot of miltary applications. They could run on petrol, diesel and even JP5 jet fuel(Kerosene)
The Rolls Royce engines had compression ignition, with a big rotor feeding a smaller rotor, that increased compression to levels that ignite diesel fuel.
I have seen 2 of these engines, they are over 1 meter tall with 4 rotors in each,2 small and 2 large.

The only way to make the compression high enough is to change what is called the K factor, which is the ratio of eccentricity to the radius of the rotor.
This would mean a pretty large engine, think of maybe 3 times the volume that the engine now takes up,but with the same internal capacity.

Bill Shiells in nz did one using a turbo. that was his speciality (hybrid fuels) after he retired from the rotary engine building game. dont know if it worked or not.

ive heard of tests using glow plugs, must have been a diesel
