Guys,

Just been to a track (silverstone @ Trax) and i have a little problem.

I thought the car was pretty well prepared but it seems maybe it wasnt! and im not sure what to do to fix it.

this post is asking two questions really..

First off, when i left home this morning, i had a full sump of oil.  Out on the track after the first 15 minute session i noticed that right infront of my BOV there was a load of oil (i figure this is normal, oil working its way up the filler neck and into the breather right?)

The thing is, theres also loads of oil around the side of the engine with the filler neck on it...its all over my leads, plugs, even on stuff just below the TB...i guess i must have a leak? or is it normal for them to leak oil here under hard cornering?

So yeah, i guess what im asking is A) can i just block off the oil breather system? I have a baffled filler tube but i guess it couldnt quite do the trick.  Or do i get a catch can?

After the second sesion i had just under half a sump of oil, and through the turns i noticed i was getting low oil pressure (needle bouncing on my defi, measured at the filter pedestal)

Can i get a sump baffle or similar? Do any of you guys run these?

Second question, is bogging in the turns.

When i was really going flat out through sharp long turns, the car would bog terribly, to the point where i was going round one turn ( a left hander) completely sideways and the car bogged and lost power so terribly it flicked me the other way and nearly off the track.  I had about 3/4 of a tank of fuel at the time, and i had the "bouncing" oil pressure problem.

I noticed this alot on turns with high lateral G\'s and its very annoying. Generally it happens more when im at equal throttle (if i floor it it tends to go away)

I originally thought fuel starvation but surely not with such a full tank? Has anyone else had this problem?

Specification of my car is as follows (excuse non relevant bits, cut and paste spec...)

8000 miles on engine
polybushed rear and diff
18 inch rays 57s pro wheels with michlin pilot sport 2 tyres
K-sport coilovers
AP 330mm 6 pot brake kit with grooved rears
Re-Amemiya vented bonnet
Re-Amemiya flush lights
cobra buckets & harnesses
Stillway uprated intercooler
baffled oil filler tube
alloy race rad
non silenced de cat mid pipe
feed downpipe
greddy intake elbow
apexi air filters
defi gauge cluster (oil pressure, temp, water temp, boost)
Apexi PFC
Odysee PC680 battery
Alloy hardpipes
15psi boost

thanks guys!

Well, if your sensor is covered in oil, then that oil pressure reading is meaningless.

The bogging might be the plugs leads or some other connector getting fouled with oil, too.

If you think the oil is coming from the breather, then fit a catch tank to catch the excess.

As far as I know, a baffled sump is to help the oil pickup suck in the oil, not really to stop it spilling out !  :-)

Bobfish

The sensor was my defi pressure sensor which was fine.

The oil is not being picked up by the tube in the turns thats why im getting the low pressure, so i guess a baffled sump is what i want! haha. Anyone seen one of these for an FD?

Martiny

Oh, by the way, you cant block off the breather....

If there is any combustion pressure getting past the seals ( and there always is),  then it goes into the sump and the oil system. This is why the standard setup feeds the breather into the intake... so it goes through the combustion process, and not merely vented to atmosphere... to reduce emmisons.

So if you tried to block it, it would build up pressure from the "blow by" gasses and blow MORE oil out. I gues it breathes out more than in! :-)

Ok, I would get a catch tank and a baffled sump. I think Carl can supply you a baffle plate, goes between the sump and motor. Some plates are dual purpose, they strengthen the engine and help the dowels prevent twisting, and are a sump baffle plate, too.

The bogging is fuel cut.  You need to get a swirl pot to stop that happening.

Bobfish

Currently on standard pump and tank.

What do you suggest? What setup do you run?

Sure its fuel cut? i had 3/4 of a tank?

Yeah, i can confirm this by experience! I blocked mine as i didn\'t realise it need to be open. I kept getting clouds of oil being blown through the turbo and into the exhaust because the oil system was being over-pressurized.

Martiny

Bobfish, a swirl pot is a very good idea. Its a temporary little tank, and it will definitely help, surely fuel starvation would lead to detonation?  ( maybe I should get one, as I do Autosolos ).

I am assuming it can be used with the standard tank guys?

Oh, what year is your car? I remember reading somewhere that Mazda added baffles to the tank from a certain year. - They probably had a few warranty engine claims after detonation from this problem!

Mine is 93.

I don\'t use a swirl pot as I have a modified Apexi GTR fuel pump.  It is modded by HKS so that a swirl pot is not needed.  Expensive pump though, £300 +

I have one of those pumps too. Often run my car on very little fuel and never had a problem. They\'re very cool pumps.

I\'ve got one of these aswell :)

To clarify, the above link is for swirl pots, and yes the pump is v. cool.. :Ladys-man

I ran that fuel pump too, never had any problems even when I was running with the fuel warning light on!
