hullo,

does anyone know if doing a compression test on a RX8 is different to a RX7? i have just called my local mazda dealership and said they cant do RX7\'s cause they are different engines?

RobbieRX-7

They can\'t do rx7\'s because they don\'t even know what one is!! Im not joking either. I went to my mazda dealer in the rx7, and they thought it was a hardtop mx5. The engine\'s work in the same way so i can\'t see why they can\'t test the rx7 engine.

Robbie is probably correct.

I doubt Mazda made a bespoke tester for the RX-8 but it might be a different one, or more likely - it might be part of some or other diagnostic tool/system they have.

Now, the engine is ever so slightly different, but thats more to do with the port placement , and I cant see any difference to do with the compression cycle.

Maybe they wouldnt know what your readings should be, so I wonder if they would agree to do the test and just give you the results ?

Now I do know of someone who would know...

Get your dealer to call TW White in Byfleet and ask for Bob or Grant, I am sure they would know....

From personal expearience I wouldn\'t reccomend a Mazda dealer, they messed several things up, told me not to drive the car else it would blow up as they reconed it had 4.4bar compression (later proved to be 7.9\'s) and they needed it rebuilt and so on

They also didn\'t know what the car was :flamed :rollin

i might be having a look at a rx7 shortly, and need someone close to do a quick compression test. will possibly take it over to them say give it a go. :)

From past experiences with franchise dealers I wouldn\'t let one wash my RX7 let alone get anywhere near the engine!

a competant dealer would go by chassis number not model anyway!

There have been several generations of compression tester, so by now most dealships will be on the latest gen and it may not include the software to handle a compression test on the earlier cars. (BTW - I assume they are still checking the compression in the traditional way on the Renisis?)
Most Mazda main dealers lost their rights to carry Rotary parts/servicing during the 3rd generation Rx7\'s life cycle - if they couldn\'t shift 30 units per year then they lost the rest of it too, so many franchises turned there back on the rotary at that point.  The T.W. White & Sons chain of dealers are one of the few who are still happy to see a rotary, there are others dotted about though, Wolverhampton is the only other one I know about.

Depending on where the car is will dictate on wether you get it tested by a main dealer or a specialist...

Good luck, I hope to see your new toy on here soon!
