well its always best to share some techy stuff and this is about whether to use exhaust putty or.........silicone sealant.
having spoken to an exhaust builder/fitter he swore on using silicone sealant instead of exhaust putty.  Well we all know what the exhaust putty is like when it goes rock hard and a pain to remove.  I was unsure whether the silicone would just blow out the flanges.  I had to fit an exhaust on my TII and i did try the silicone on what was some pretty crappy flanges after it failed on the MOT.  It worked!!!  easy to apply, easy to remove and it does work very well.  You can use it on new exhaust not just on old.  Never thought it would work but sometimes you have to try it to believe it.  I used some fairly good stuff (black general purpose) and it did do the job.

most of us have some knocking around so cheaper than the putty and the putty goes off easier in the tin once opened.

well it just proves what can work. I used just general purpose silicone but I have got some high temp stuff thats white.  God i\'m still conscious of the colour even when its not on show !!!

Thats proper, but what do you do when you use new metal gaskets and is still leaks?   The silicone would come in handy then....

Ricco_04

Never heard of using silicone on exhausts untill I brought a cat back of here and there was some still on the flange.  I always use new metal gaskets but  even sometimes (rare though) they can sometimes blow then deffinately silicone instead of putty :yes

DRIFTMOTION

I\'ve used silicon on all my exhausts over the years, never let me down yet!
