Hello,
I have an \'87 FC and it has been sitting for a while. I started it up and it was misfiring and spluttering. I have driven it around to maybe clear the engine. However, through all gears it has a lack of power, needing mostly first or second, misfires on deceleration and idles badly. Also it takes a lot longer to start and puffs out a ploom of white smoke once started for a small period of time.
My first thought was ignition, so i have replaced spark plugs, leads from dizzy to plugs, checked air leaks, changed coils, checked ignition gap and reset the timing. Nothing really helped. I thought I may have left the jumper wire on, but no! I have looked in the manual and nothing really leaps out.
Has anyone else had this or can offer any help? cos it is doing my head in!
cheers

Brett

Hi :wave

We will need a little more info from you before we can help :yes

* How many miles has the car done?
* Has it had a rebuilt/replaced engine in its history?
* How long was it stood for?

There are lots of possibilites, but without a little more background I don\'t want to speculate.

The car has done 113k. The engine was rebuilt at around 90k and it was stood for two/ three months.

It could be something as simple as bad fuel?  Does it rev freely in neutral once started?

Once started will it maintain an idle or does it hunt around or gradually die etc?
Have you checked the wiring to the fuel pump?  Have you inspected the fuel filters? (High pressure is on the passenger side of the bulk head at the bottom - looks like a black canister, low pressure pre filter is in the tank, accessible by lifting the boot carpet.)
Is the Airflow meeter plugged in properly?  Does the flap move freely?

Have a play with the above and let me know if you get any joy! :)

Hi
It does hunt before eventually dying. I checked the wiring for the fuel pump- all ok. checked both filters- ok. checked air flow sensor wiring and working- ok. checked the injectors were working- all ok. checked solenoid resistor- ok.
the car isnt working yet is driving me round the bend.:Hammer

jamie_supra

I put £20 of new petrol and some octane booster.

played around with the timing again. got rid of the awful backfire, but the lack of power is still there. :Grrr

Change your spark plugs?

Did you fix it? What was wrong?

Brett

Hi,

Can you confirm if it is happy to rev in neutral?
